1817, 7 over 3. O-101a, Rarity 2. PCGS graded VF-35. This is the common 1817/3 overdate that is available in a wide range of grades. It is one of this cataloger's favorite overdates in U.S. coinage due to the extreme clarity of the feature -- the 3 underdigit is clear as little, if any attempt was made to efface it before production began. This Choice VF example has light gray surfaces with delicate toning on each side. A couple of trivial marks on each side are consistent with the grade (PCGS # 6111) .
Estimated Value $900 - 1,000.

1828. Square Base 2, Small 8's, Large Letters. Overton-118, Rarity 3. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely shades of mauve-gray and lilac toning are displayed on each side in an even fashion. A more than moderately fresh and lively Gem with strong luster underpinning the attractive surface color. Furthermore, it possesses a sharp strike with full definition on the motto above the eagle. Everything a collector would want from the grade, and probably then some. 1828 was a year in transition at the Mint. Several different date punches were used. The Guide Book of United States Coins lists five major varieties. Pop 13; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 6151) .

Distinguishable by a small tine (spike) that protrudes into the field from the feather just below the juncture of the right wing with the body. The surfaces, which have a light amount of wear on the devices, are luminous beneath golden-russet and sea-green toning that deepens at the rims. Nicely struck and appealing (PCGS # 6156) .

1831. Overton-103, Rarity 1. PCGS graded MS-66. A faint die crack below the date and a recut upright on the 5 in the denomination confirms this common Overton die pairing. Modest honey-gold and pale blue colors grace this highly lustrous and well struck Gem. The reverse is virtually pristine, and the obverse is carefully preserved. Pop 5; 2 finer, 1 in 66+, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 6159) .

1836. Lettered Edge. O-109 Rarity 4. PCGS graded MS-64. A sharp spike is seen on the outer point of star 7 and the olive stem is entirely over the top of C. A scarcer die pairing with sharp definition throughout, not always the case on these coins. Nice light toning is seen on both sides, and just a couple of tiny abrasions are reported at the center of the obverse, these possibly limiting the grade. Pop 57; 23 finer (PCGS # 6169) .
