Lot 1317
1896-S. PCGS graded MS-65. While the 1896-S is perceived by most to be the least challenging of the "Big Three" Barber quarter issues to acquire, that perception holds true only for circulated pieces. The '96-S, despite a mintage over four times that of the 1913-S, is far more elusive than the later issue in Mint State grades. The 1913-S was known to be a low-mintage issue from the start, and as a result, collectors from the burgeoning numismatic population of the early 20th century saved numerous examples. By contrast, the 1896-S slipped unnoticed into circulation, and it was not until much later that the issue was recognized as a condition rarity. With only 10 Gems graded by PCGS and just one coin finer, an MS-66, the challenge of finding an MS-65 example is clear.

A barely toned example with a certain reflective character in the fields on each side. The strike is simply fantastic with all details boldly impressed. Exceptional surfaces reveal only minimal imperfections, and the eye appeal is top of the line. A classic rarity, and a most desirable coin in Gem Mint State. Pop 10; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 5615) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 50,000.

Lot 1318
1898. NGC graded Proof 68 Ultra Cameo. CAC Approved. When studying the proof Barber quarter series, by far, the best produced and attractive issues are the 1896, 1897 and 1898. A survivor of the final issue, this Superb Gem proof, is one of the finest survivors among the 735 coins originally struck and demonstrates ample confirmation of that proposition. Many of the other survivors of this delivery are also quite well preserved, suggesting that much of the mintage found its way into the hands of dealers and collectors at the time rather than the general public. Both sides are silky smooth and temptingly close to literal perfection; there are no distracting blemishes or visible hairlines what-so-ever. A brilliant, glassy appearance is also displayed with a profound contrasting quality. A stellar quality proof type candidate that would serve with distinction in the finest cabinet. Pop 14; 12 finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 15,000.

1901-S. PCGS graded About Good-3. Smooth, even wear with a full rim showing on the obverse. The reverse rim has worn well into the tops of the legend, as usually happens on well circulated '01-S quarters. This key date issue is in demand in all grades from AG to BU. The S mintmark is complete and clear, as are the digits of the date. Pleasing for the modest grade (PCGS # 5630) .

Lot 1322
1904-O. PCGS graded MS-66. This originally and carefully preserved Gem is enhanced by stunning copper-gold iridescence on the obverse that appears to drift toward the rims. The reverse exhibits multicolored iridescence including green, gray, gold, and a hint of crimson at the rim. The overall strike is quite sharp by New Orleans Mint standards, and only on the stars along the upper-right obverse border do we see mentionable softness of detail. Satiny and smooth, a solidly graded Gem from an issue that is seldom offered any finer than MS-65. Pop 12; 4 finer, 1 in 66+, 2 in 67, 1 in 67+. (PCGS # 5638) .

Lot 1324
1907. PCGS graded Proof 68. CAC Approved. A richly toned specimen with a mixed palette of deep red-orange, sea-blue, and gold on the obverse; the reverse exhibits various shades of purple, navy-blue, lilac, old-gold, and red. The underlying surfaces are deeply mirrored and essentially perfect with no marks or hairlines. For pedigree purposes, a couple of dark spots are mentioned at the upper portions of Liberty's head, however, these hardly detract from the glowing colorations. A treat to the eye, especially to those who appreciate vividly toned proofs of the series. One of only 575 proofs produced, the sixth lowest proof production in the Barber quarter series. Tied for finest graded with just one other by PCGS. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Pop 2; none finer at PCGS. Nice rainbow toning (PCGS # 5693) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.
