Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1265
1845. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. CAC Approved. Colorfully toned, particularly the obverse and illustrating the 1845 Seated quarter on the PCGS Coinfacts website. Most design features show bold definition, and only a few microscopic marks are seen. The 1845 quarter ranks as an important condition rarity in this lofty state of preservation. Pop 20; 4 finer in 65 (PCGS # 5408) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

1852-O PCGS graded Genuine Unc Details. Cleaning. PCGS declares a light cleaning, but the evidence of this is well-hidden beneath mottled lilac-gray toning on both sides. It also exhibits Uncirculated detail with a moderately sharp strike. Knowledgeable collectors know the rarity of the 1852-O quarter, especially in high grades. Many ultimately settle for heavily worn or damaged pieces. This lot will draw substantial attention from Seated quarter specialists (PCGS # 5420) .

1856. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. Colorfully toned on the obverse with reflective fields and frosty motifs. Peripheral shades of russet and cobalt-blue are noted while the reverse is essentially untoned. A rarity from an unknown but tiny mintage, perhaps on the order of 30 pieces, with just a small proportion of that number currently known in all grades. Among the finest proofs of the date certified by PCGS. A few marks are noted on the plastic holder and should not be confused with surface problems. An excellent opportunity for an advanced Seated Liberty quarter specialist or a collector who simply appreciates rare U.S. coins. Pop 4; 1 finer in 67. (PCGS # 85552) .

1857. PCGS graded MS-65. This nicely toned example exhibits a bright Gem-quality sheen overall. The strike is good, save for the obverse stars, which are typically soft, while a lone abrasion on Liberty's head is noted solely for accuracy. Seemingly earmarked for inclusion in a high-grade type set. Pop 44; 44 finer (PCGS # 5442) .

Lot 1271
1859. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. From an original mintage of 800 pieces, only about 200 or so 1859 Liberty Seated quarters seem to have been distributed to contemporary collectors, the remainder being melted at the Mint. This conditionally rare Gem offers not only carefully preserved surfaces, but also an impressive Cameo finish that is in so much demand today. Untoned save for a bit of light, mottled, pale-tan tinting, with pinpoint striking detail to all elements of the design. A couple of tiny marks are noted on the obverse, these being visible only with magnification. A beautiful specimen. Pop 8; 1 finer in 67.

Lot 1272
1859. NGC graded Proof 65. Lovely toning overlays both sides, each with a different appearance. The obverse is layered in an interesting combination of antique-gold and reddish-rose iridescence. On the reverse, we note more pronounced color with turquoise-blue and pastel-pink shades present. The mirrored finish remains vibrant despite the extensive nature of the toning, and a full strike is present in all areas -- even the stars and Liberty's head. This is a much scarcer date than a mintage of 800 pieces might indicate as many proof 1859 quarters are presumed to have been melted in the Mint when they were not purchased by the end of the year. Pop 21; 19 finer, 15 in 66, 3 in 67, 1 in 67 Star .

1863. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. Only 460 proof quarters were coined in 1863, and this lovely Gem is possessed of outstanding eye appeal. Both sides are bright and exhibit an ice-white appearance. A pinpoint strike is easily seen, as is a bright, mirrored finish in the fields that presents especially well as the coin is examined under a light. As required of the Cameo designation, the devices are moderately frosted. Exceptionally smooth and well preserved with the utmost care, this "top-of-the-pop" specimen ranks as the finest-certified Cameo Proof 1863 quarter known to PCGS. Pop 1; none finer at both services. 1864. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. Pretty reddish-russet iridescence is splashed over the obverse, with the rim area also revealing bold cobalt-blue toning. The reverse is much lighter with some peripheral golden color. Sharp, satiny devices offer appreciable contrast to mirror finish fields, all areas expectably smooth at the Gem grade level. Conditionally rare for this challenging Civil War date in the proof Seated Liberty quarter series, and among the finest certified. From an extremely low mintage, only 470 pieces were struck in 1864. This represents the second lowest proof production run in the series after 1858. An exemplary representative of the assigned grade. Pop 3; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 85560) .

1864. PCGS graded Proof 64. This originally toned near-Gem presents an interesting, somewhat variegated toning scheme featuring colors of sea-blue, streaky mauve-tan, and sunset golden over the highly reflective surfaces. The colors are somewhat mottled over the reverse. Fully struck throughout. A delightful Choice specimen that is bumping up against an even higher grade. The 1864 is a scarcer proof Seated quarter due to both a limited mintage of only 470 pieces, and the presumed destruction of numerous examples during the Civil War. Pop 54; 16 finer (PCGS # 5560) .

1866. With Motto. PCGS graded Proof 66 PQ. CAC Approved. This dazzling Gem Proof displays lightly frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields, but not quite enough to qualify as a Cameo. The obverse exhibits a mottled mixture of turquoise-blue and russet toning. The reverse is more colorfully toned with turquoise-blue at the border and deep crimson-red at the center. First year of issue for the With Motto design type and an important opportunity for the type collector or date specialist. Just 725 Proofs were minted with very few Gems (like this) surviving today. 1870. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A brilliant white Cameo Proof. A bright satiny finish shows on Liberty and the eagle, and the fields sparkle with mirrored reflectivity as when first issued. The 1870 is difficult to find in this outstanding condition. All details were struck with the advantageous reliability of this year, that is, sharply by the dies, which then left behind bold elements of detail throughout. Only 1,000 proofs were minted, this remains as one of the finer. Pop 9; 6 finer, 3 in 66, 1 in 66+, 1 in 67, 1 in 67+ Star (PCGS # 85569) .

1871. PCGS graded MS-65. Sharply struck and highly lustrous, this frosty-white example is sure to be of strong interest to collectors of Seated Liberty coinage. The business strike 1871 is a scarcer Motto issue with just 118,200 pieces produced. Mint State survivors are very scarce, and true Gems are virtually non-existent. Many coins of this issue are believed to have been melted to provide bullion for the new weight Arrows coinage of 1873-1874 prior to their release from the Mint. 1871. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo. A Superb Gem Proof with magnificent originality. Both sides exhibit "target" toning with turquoise-blue, copper-rose, and pinkish-silver iridescence that lightens at the central regions. Watery fields and fully impressed details, the frosted-textured devices are fully visible at all angles of examination. Our research indicates the proof Seated quarters from the late 1860s and 1870s are seen much less frequently in today's market than those that date from the 1880s and early 1890s. Only 960 proofs were struck. Pop 3; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 85570) .
