Nickel Three Cent Pieces

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1077
1865. PCGS graded Proof 67+ Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. Not only is the 1865 the first proof in the three cent nickel series, but it is also the rarest. Given the fact that numismatists frequently prefer first-year coins when assembling type sets, one can easily understand the elusiveness of survivors in today's market. It is generally recognized that about 500+ proofs were struck this premier year of issue, and the 1865 is a key date for the series as a proof. This is a mostly brilliant Cameo Gem featuring bright surfaces that are lightly toned at the peripheries. A boldly contrasted appearance shows between mirror-finish fields and frosted devices. A single tiny spot is mentioned on Liberty's cheek for future identification purposes. Fully struck and free from contact marks, this impressive Gem would make a beautiful addition to any collection. Pop 1; the finest example graded by both services. (PCGS # 83761) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

Lot 1079
1876. PCGS graded Proof 66 Deep Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. This remarkable Gem specimen boasts liquid-glass mirrors and an intensity of frost not seen on any but the best and earliest specimens to eject from the dies before the frostiness faded on each additional striking. Bright centers with gentle golden toning circling the border regions. A coin that will enhance a type collection or registry set of the denomination and that will please even the most fussy of collectors. Pop 3; 1 finer in 65+. (PCGS # 93772) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.

Lot 1081
1877. PCGS graded Proof 66 PQ. CAC Approved. A Gem example that should be reviewed as a candidate for the "Cameo" designation. Unbroken and unabraded luster and mint frost cover the design elements. Attractive sky-blue and golden-pink colors enhance the appearance of both sides, perhaps a bit heavier on the reverse. A proof-only issue with second lowest mintage of the series, only 510 pieces being struck. In its well preserved state, the present lot seems like good value when compared to rarity. Pop 52; 5 finer (PCGS # 3773) .
