1852 N-7 R1 Repunched Date EF45+. Frosty medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas giving this cent excellent eye appeal. The only marks are two rim nicks on the lower part of the reverse. Scarce EDS, die state a. Repunching is visible on all 4 digits of the date. Very close to AU50.

1852 N-8 R2. NGC graded MS-66 Brown. Highly lustrous light bluish steel and olive brown with generous traces of mellowed mint red showing in the protected areas on both sides. Sharply struck and very attractive. The notable marks are a small, microscopic abrasion in the field off the chin and a tiny nick on the nose even with the bottom edge of the eye. LDS, die state d, with a couple very fine die cracks on the obverse and one more on the reverse. Our grade is MS63. The Agora Collection provenance is shown on the NGC label.

1852 N-8 R2. PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown with more than half the mint color remaining. The only significant mark is a faint spot of reddish carbon hidden in the midst of a shallow low spot that covers most of the neck (caused by debris on the die). Similar tiny low spots extend down to the 18 in the date. MDS, die state c, with a fine die crack from the lowest curl to the dentils under star 13 and a faint die crack from the tip of the coronet to the dentils over star 5. Our grade is MS62. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 147251) .

Possibly lightly cleaned long ago but the color and eye appeal are quite nice. A faint speck of darker toning in the field off the tip of the coronet is a good identifying mark, but it is visible only under strong magnification. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with short die lines from the dentils at stars 1 & 2. Removed from an ICG slab graded MS63BN (ICG label #1419983101 included). Our grade is MS60 sharpness net AU58 for the light cleaning. Tied for CC#10 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 147254) .

A small planchet flake at the base of the dentils right of star 11 is the only mark. Rare LDS, die state e, with a rim cud break over TES-O. The margins of the cud are clearly defined on this example. Removed from an NGC/NCS slab graded XF Details, Improperly Cleaned (NCS label #5077440-040 included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance).

Choice except for a splash of carbon on the curl over the 2, a smaller spot of carbon on the cheek, and a half dozen specks of carbon inside the wreath. LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #13). The repunching at the 18 is gone and a die crack extends from the tip of the bust through star 1 to the dentils at star 2. Our grade is net MS60. The only marks are a dull, shallow rim nick at the first S in STATES and a small spot of reddish chocolate brown toning over NE in ONE. Rare EDS, die state a. The die lines at the base of the N in ONE are clear. Our grade is AU58. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but tied for third finest known of the EDS in the Grellman census. The only marks are a small rim nick under the tip of the wreath ribbon and a tiny speck of dark toning at the left end of the top of the E in CENT. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state b early. The repunching under the base of the 1 is clear and a small lump has formed at the base of the crossbar of the E in ONE.

No spots or stains and only a few trivial marks. The notable defects are a tiny planchet void (as struck) in the field over the right point of star 2 and nicks on the 185 in the date. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. This is a rare die state for the variety and it clearly shows the fine repunching at the dentils under the 1 and the top of a stray 1 imbedded in the bust over the left side of the 8. Apparently someone at the mint was playing with the 1 punch. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#6 honors in the Grellman census.

Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a. The die clashmarks at the throat and over the O in ONE are visible but fading. Sharply struck with fully defined radial lines on all the stars. A very nice cent.   Pair of 1853 Cents in Rare Die States. Includes N-21 R4 EDS (a) graded VF30 and an N-23 R4 EDS (a) graded VF35 (removed from an NGC slab graded AU55, label #3313373-007 included). The earliest die lines from the dentils at star 1 on the N-21 are dull but still visible, and the earliest die lines described for the N-23 variety in the Grellman book are clear (as is the stray 4 punched into the back of the ear). A nice pair of cents, both attractive glossy brown and chocolate. Lot of 2 coins.

1853 N-26 R2. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Attractive lustrous mint red fading to steel brown and light olive with at least half the mint color remaining, mostly on the obverse. This cent offers great eye appeal. The only marks are a few specks of darker toning scattered over both sides, none notable, and traces of an old fingerprint between stars 12 & 13. E-MDS, die state b. The fine die lines over ERI in AMERICA are gone but both of the points down from the main curl over the inner curl are clear. Called MS63+ and tied for CC#2 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #30681. Our grade is MS64+, CC#3 in the Grellman census behind two marginally finer MS65 examples. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are shown on the PCGS label.

1853 N-28 R3+ AU55. Glossy light olive and steel mixed with medium chocolate. Flowline luster covers the fields and this cent has mint state eye appeal. Just a hint of friction on the highest points. Two tiny nicks on the rim over TE in UNITED are the notable marks. MDS, die state b. The dull die lines from the dentils at stars 4 & 12 are weak but visible.

1853 N-29 R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel and olive brown with about a third of the mint red remaining. The notable marks are a thin, faint streak of darker toning caused by planchet impurity from the top of the head to the lower points of star 8 and a tiny, barely visible scuff that breaks the frost in the field close before the chin. MDS, die state b. The die lines at the throat are gone and the ones from the dentils at stars 1-2 are dull but still visible. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade, tied for CC#3 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 406048) .

1853 N-30 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous bluish steel and olive with 10-15% of the mint red remaining. Satiny mint frost covers the planchet and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only defects are a shallow low spot on the neck under the earlobe (caused by debris on the die) and a tiny arch-shaped struck-through line under the base of the 1 (also as struck). EDS, die state a. The fine die lines from the dentils at star 13 are clear. A very nice cent with lots of original mint color for a "BN" designation. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 406050) .

Nice eye appeal in spite of the retoning. A tiny rim nick just right of star 7 is the only notable mark. MDS, die state b. The die lines from the dentils to the top of RI in AMERICA are dull but still visible and the fields outside the wreath are slightly rough from die erosion. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU58BN (NGC label #3313373-010 included, and it shows the attribution).
