Lot 338
1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8 with Style I Hair Fair-2. Sharpness G5, even better in some areas, but the planchet is uneven and very slightly bent thanks to several dull dents. No corrosion or verdigris, and the toning is an attractive glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. The date is clear. EDS, Breen state I, before any trace of buckling at S-OF-A.

1798/7 S-150 R5 Overdate 8 over 7 Fair-2. Glossy medium chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, just a few marks consistent with a heavily worn cent. A short scratch in the hair under IB in LIBERTY, a dull dent under the hair ribbon, and some fine hairline scratches on the reverse are the notable defects. LDS with heavy swelling on the reverse. The date is strong and the overdate is obvious. In fact the date is the strongest feature showing on this cent, but enough of the reverse remains visible to be certain of the correct attribution.

1798. Style 1 hair. Lightly cleaned and retoned a rather glossy olive and dark steel brown with lighter reddish brown toning in some of the protected areas on the reverse. Nothing about this cent suggests it was "Smoothed" so I suspect PCGS meant to say "Cleaning." No marks or other defects, and this cent offers nice eye appeal. The date is bold and the legends are complete. LDS, Breen state III, with obvious swelling on the reverse and a radial die crack from the rim to the upper edge of the bust. Our grade is VF20 net F15. The "1st Hair Style" feature is noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 1431) .

Five points sharper but there are traces of hard crud mixed with shallow verdigris in some of the protected areas on both sides, strongest at ICA in AMERICA. Otherwise just a few light contact marks, a dull diagonal nick low on the neck the only notable one. Rather glossy dark olive brown. MDS, Breen state II, with obvious swelling at ED in UNITED. The date and legends are bold.

The only notable marks are a very light rim bruise under the lowest curl and a dull rim nick at IC in AMERICA, and neither mark is distracting. M-LDS, Breen state IX, with a strong cud break connecting TE in STATES to the rim with a slightly raised retained cud break affecting the adjacent TA. Very shallow low spots cover the field around the leaves under MERICA. A nice example of a neat die state. Removed from a PCGS slab graded VF30 (PCGS label #1431.30/04143203 included).

1798 S-165 R4 Large 8, Style II Hair F15. Five points sharper but there is a patch of microscopic roughness hidden in the hair near the ear. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a couple light contact marks under LI and into the hair, a rim nick under the 79, and a light rim bruise under the right side of the denominator. Rather glossy steel and olive brown blended with reddish chocolate toning in the hair were the microscopic roughness resides. Nicely struck MDS Breen state II, with die clashmarks at the throat but an uncracked reverse. The second T in STATES was first punched inverted, then corrected, and the top of the inverted T is clear. A nice example of a variety that's difficult to find in grades better than VG.

Lot 346
1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF35. Glossy light olive and steel brown with overtones of sea green and light bluish steel. There is very little wear on this cent but the strike is uneven, as often seen on this variety, thanks to dies that were out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not parallel). This improper die alignment probably caused the strong die crack on the reverse which is located at the place where the dies came the closest when striking a cent. The crack must have occurred very early in the marriage and an uncracked example is unknown. No roughness or verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks. The notable ones are a short diagonal scratch in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon and a couple very small nicks on the neck. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack arcing from the dentils through the E in UNITED, the wreath, and the fraction ending at the rim under the right side of the denominator. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW. The bust, lower half of the 798, and the opposing OF-A on the reverse are all weakly struck.

1798 S-169 R3 G6 but Counterstamped. Glossy medium chocolate and olive with smooth, attractive surfaces. No defects, but there is a large counterstamp covering nearly the entire head of Ms. Liberty. The stamp is a large raised "T" inside an incuse heart, and the style appears to be quite old. Unlisted in Brunk and the first example of the counterstamp seen by this cataloger. The date is strong but the central part of the reverse was flattened by the stamp.

None of the nicks is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is nice for the grade. No roughness or verdigris. Glossy medium chocolate brown. 1798 S-174 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VG7. Sharpness near VF20 where the details were properly struck up, but the obverse is covered with myriad light scratches, all blended into the natural toning. The major flaw on this cent is the uneven strike. The bottom part of the obverse and opposing upper part of the reverse were poorly struck due to axial die misalignment (the die faces were not parallel). As a result the date is faint with only the 98 partially visible, and most of STATES is gone as well. Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. LDS, Breen state V. The die clashmarks are strong and the lower half of the numerator is very thin. An interesting piece in spite of the obverse scratches.

1800/798 NC-6 R6+ Overdate 800 over 798, Style I Hair G5+. A point or two sharper but there are traces of microscopic roughness on otherwise smooth surfaces. The roughness is most noticeable at OF AMER where there are microscopic traces of greenish verdigris, but it is not distracting. Both sides show some light contact marks, all consistent with the grade. The notable ones are a light rim bruise at the N in UNITED and a dull diagonal nick over the N in ONE. Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown and steel mixed with some lighter chocolate brown on the obverse. The date and legends are complete and clear and the repunching on the base of the F in OF is obvious. In addition the upper edge of the ends of the wreath stems slants down, which is diagnostic for this rare variety. Not perfect but very close to net G6. 1802 S-228 R2 Error Fraction 1/000 PCGS Genuine, AU Details, Environmental Damage. Attractive frosty light to medium chocolate brown. This cent offers great "naked" eye appeal, but a glass reveals microscopic porosity and granularity, strongest in the field behind the portrait. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a small chip out of the planchet in the field over the bust tip, a dull rim nick behind the head, and a collection of tiny nicks on the A in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with several die cracks on the reverse. The Error Fraction is clear, and this feature is shown on the PCGS label. Our grade is EF45+ sharpness net VF20.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1802 S-231 R1 Stemless Wreath VF30. Five points sharper but there is a small splash of reddish chocolate toning on the numerator and left end of the wreath ribbon. Otherwise the toning is a very attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. A thin nick across the base of the 2 is the only notable contact mark. M-LDS, Breen state VII, with a series of die cracks at RTY and in the field before the portrait. The Stemless Wreath feature is bold.

Lot 386
1802 S-236 R1 VF20+. Ten points sharper but there are some contact marks on otherwise smooth, choice surfaces. Most of the contact marks are rim bruises, strongest at the lower curls. The only marks other than the half dozen rim bruises are a small dig in the dentils under the 0 in the date and an even smaller one in the field near the dentils over the bust tip. Attractive glossy light olive and medium chocolate brown. MDS, Breen state VI, with die cracks and clashmarks but no cud. Curiously a small "12" has been inconspicuously punched into the edge under the date, and S-236 is the 12th variety in the Doughty sequence of 1802 varieties (D-175). Can't be a coincidence.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
