Lot 2221
1853 Half Dollar Round. Breen and Gillio-435, Low Rarity 5. Arms of California. PCGS graded MS-63. PQ. The obverse displays the Arms of California, Minerva seated with a bear at her feet; the reverse has a defiant eagle similar to that seen on Augustus Humbert's famous fifty dollar gold "Slugs." The maker's identity is unknown, but the quality of engraving is amazingly high. This is the only appearance of either die -- other varieties often represent mulings or die pairings of more common dies. The fields are partially reflective and the coin has an abundant amount of reddish-golden patina often seen on this issue. This is the classic rarity and key to the entire series of California Fractional gold coins, and an important opportunity for the serious California gold specialist. Pop 19; 11 finer, 7 in 64, 3 in 65, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 10471) .
