Lot 1536
1883 Hawaiian Quarter Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Attractive multi-dimensional toning on both sides whose natural hues swing from lighter to darker shades with a touch of iridescence now and then. The King's portrait shows nice sideburn and beard detail (often a weak area due to it being the highest point on the obverse). King Kalakaua (a.k.a. David Kalakaua during his non political career prior to being elected King in 1874), had silver coins struck in 1883 that went into circulation early in 1884. They follow the same size, weight, and fineness standard as our own coins. The dies for these were made by Charles E. Barber at the Philadelphia Mint. The coins themselves were struck at the San Francisco facility. Five sets of quarter dies were made. For numismatists who vacation in our 50th State, Hawaii, be sure to visit the Archives of Hawaii in Honolulu (on the Palace grounds under the big banyan tree) and ask to see one or all of the cancelled Hawaiian coin dies. While they are not on display, scholars are given the opportunity to view them. Just say that you are a scholar engaging in research (PCGS # 10987) .
Estimated Value $400 - 425.
