Lot 1407
1900 Lafayette Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely light golden toning. Only 36,026 minted. Bold, rolling-fresh finish, as frosty as when first issued. Difficult to find a Lafayette Dollar so nice. Next a word about the strike. The pressure transmitted from the die to the blank reveals itself in sharp portraits of the two men, as well as on the seated horseman from the equestrian statue of Lafayette in Paris.

America's first Commemorative Silver Dollar, the designs were by Charles E. Barber after an engraving of Houdon's bust of Washington. On the reverse, Barber depicted the Lafayette equestrian statue at the Paris Exposition of 1900. Lafayette Dollars were sold to defray part of the cost of completing Paul Wayland Bartlett's statue of the French General, then under construction in Paris for display at the exposition. Out of an authorization for 50,000 pieces, 36,000 were sold, the remainder being melted.

The Lafayette silver dollar was minted in one day, December 14, 1899, at the Philadelphia Mint, this being the 100th anniversary of the death of George Washington. When queried about prestriking the coins, for it was not yet 1900, the date on the coin, the Mint took the position that the date did not represent the striking at all but, simply, observed the year that the Paris Exposition was held, this being noted on the reverse. By this logic the present coin is dateless. Such little sidelights are interesting in the collecting of the series.

The 1900 Lafayette dollar is very unusual, indeed unique among coinage of its era, for the dies were made by hand. The motifs were impressed on the obverse and reverse, and then by use of hand punches the dates and numerals were added around the border -- in the old-style process generally in use in the 1830s and before, but long obsolete by 1899. The reason for doing this is not clear today. Probably it was one of expediency. A number of die pairs were needed, and quickly, since the normal hubbing and master die process was bypassed. Accordingly, this is the only commemorative coin that can be collected today by die variety! Pop 273; 98 finer (PCGS # 9222) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

1935 Spanish Trail Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Mostly untoned. Popular key type of the commemorative series. A beautiful silver-bright coin with no objectionable marks or blemishes. As soon as one sees the booming luster on this Spanish Trail commemorative, it comes as no surprise everything is razor-sharp on all devices as well. Only 10,008 struck.

The obverse has a punning head of a cow in honor of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca (Cabeza de Vaca being Spanish for "head of a cow"). Nunez explored the Old Spanish Trail region in 1528. The reverse delineates (none to accurately) his path from Florida to El Paso, Texas along with a yucca tree at center, a common regional plant. L. W. Hoffecker designed the coin along with Edmund J. Senn, an El Paso sculptor who translated the sketches into plaster models. A total of 10,000 were struck, the authorized mintage (PCGS # 9376) .
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300.

1936 Elgin Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. CAC Approved. A nice white coin, the Elgin Commemorative tends to shine when found this outstanding. The luster is heavily frosted rather than more satin-like as seen on most Commemoratives in the 1930s. We have to assume this was intentional, and requested by the artist who designed the coin. Outside artists often were allowed to dictate certain aspects of their designs, within the bounds of the limitation of the minting presses and die preparation constraints. Again, this is a gorgeous Gem (PCGS # 9303) .

1936-D Cincinnati Music Center Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. A hint of light gold tone near the edges makes this a superior Cincinnati example. The low mintage caused a stir of feverish speculation among collectors when the Mint released this issue in 1936. Prices rose almost at once to $75 for the three-coin, P-D-S set, before a reaction set in and the market tumbled in 1937-38. Only 5,005 struck.   1936-P,D,S Texas Half Dollar Set. Grade include: 1936-P, NGC MS-66, CAC Approved; 1936-D, PCGS MS-66; 1936-S, NGC MS-66. Struck on the occasion of the state's 100th anniversary celebrations held in Dallas. The obverse eagle is superimposed on a five-pointed star representing Texas as the Lone Star State. The reverse uses a winged Liberty with various evens and persons important in Texas history incorporated into the design. One feature of the coin that came in for criticism was the "vulture-like" eagle; no one, it seems, had noticed (except possibly Coppini himself and Breen who reports on it) that the bird alludes to the Mexican national emblem and thus would have represented Texas's old Mexican origin.
