Barber Quarter Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 427
1892. PCGS graded Proof 66+. Intense blue toning on both sides. Only 1,245 minted. A lustrous example that has shimmering mirror surface below the incredibly beautiful toning. In this way, from first to last, the luster glows. Furthermore, from center to periphery, the strike as keen as any seen on any first-year 1892 Proof Barber Quarter Dollar. Pop 1; 16 finer, 10 in 67, 1 in 67+, 5 in 68 (PCGS # 5678) .

Created by Charles E. Barber, chief engraver at the Philadelphia Mint from 1877 to 1917. The obverse of the Barber silver coinage consisted of a Liberty head with a cap and wreath. This figure was inspired both by classical Greek and Roman models and by the designs of various 19th-century French coinage. The word "LIBERTY" appeared on the headband in incuse; since it wears relatively quickly in circulation, it is often used by numismatists to help determine the condition of circulated coins. The Liberty head is flanked by six stars on the left and seven on the right, and the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears above it. The date is centered below the figure.

On the quarter and half dollar, a heraldic eagle, similar to that featured on the Great Seal of the United States, is the central design element, with "QUARTER DOLLAR" or "HALF DOLLAR" and the mint mark (if any) located beneath it. As on the Great Seal, the eagle carries a banner in its beak reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and the amount of the motto visible is helpful to numismatic graders in determining the condition of circulated specimens. A field of 13 stars (the same number as on the obverse, representing the 13 original American colonies) appears above the eagle, and on the top edge, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed.
Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,500.

1892. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Fully white. Only 1,245 struck. Here, too, we are pleased to describe a Gem Proof Quarter Dollar of the finest order whose watery mirror-deep luster adorns the silvery surfaces. Piercingly sharp for the date, easily finer in sharpness than many in nominally higher grades, this also deserves notice for its strong Cameo relief on both sides, satiny frosted to a fair-thee-well against the reflective fields. Pop 34; 33 finer, 1 in 66 Star, 24 in 67, 8 in 68.

1893. NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo. A nice white Proof. Only 792 struck. A blazing Gem Proof with highly concentrated luster-frost on the devices (including the tops of the letters, stars and date digits, we should add. Dare we say almost ostentatious eye appeal? Nary a weakness at Liberty or the eagle, this coin was given a full multi-ton blow by the special coining press and razor-edge dies, as most often seen for this Barber Quarter year. Certainly worth your consideration. Pop 1; 5 finer, 4 in 67, 1 in 67 Star.

1895. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo. Only 880 minted. Lovely original toning on both sides. The popularity of this Barber design is widespread, being that it is the classic date in the series that shares the identical Proof mintage of the famed 1895 Proof Morgan dollar, 880 pieces. The 1895 is also a prime type candidate for any Type Set buyer. Not all of these coins appear to have been well cared fore, however. Their fate was sealed at the beginning due to their being few means of preserving them without injury other than for the thin tissue paper in which the Mint wrapped them before posting the sets to its customers. Deep pleasing spot-light toning adorns the peripheral regions, while the fully frosted devices have a silvery tint where the color failed to intrude. Noticeable reflectivity in the fields allows the cameo contrast to be present on both sides. Pop 5; 7 finer, 2 in 67+, 5 in 68 (PCGS # 85681) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1895. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Fully white Gem Proof Cameo. Only 880 minted. The silvery luster on both sides is full with a somewhat satin texture on the cameo-frosted devices, but whose field is beyond amazing to amazingly amazing! This is a decidedly well-struck example, in other words, and one with razor-edged details. Like most 1890s decade Proofs which were struck on the Mint's hydraulic press, it is one to admire. (Seated Liberty Proofs to about 1880, curiously, were said to have been struck using an old screw press at the Mint, but in that year or close to it, Philadelphia's medal press was "pressed into" service for the Proofs.) Superb in every detail, this 1895 Barber Quarter has no bothersome spots or points of contention, which one expects from the superb PR67 grade; nor did the dies leave behind anything less than a bold, rigid impression whose magnificence reveals itself in the stars, the legends, and especially in the center motifs. Pop 13; 20 finer, 1 in 67 Star, 1 in 67+, 12 in 68, 4 in 68 Star, 1 in 68+ Star, 1 in 69.

1896. PCGS graded MS-67 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely lavender and blue iridescent toning. A beautiful, frosty-white Gem augmented by snowy luster which serves to magnify the coin's brilliant arc of gleaming blue and lavender toning, there are no unsettling bagmarks on either side. The reverse illuminated by a ring of the same colors with light silvery moon glow right smack dab in the center. In the period in which this Barber coin was made, weak strikes predominate on the branch mint coinage, but Philadelphia’s production standard was second to none. That is why it is a pleasure to report a strike with preciseness only now and then found. Pop 5; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 5613) .

1898. PCGS graded Proof 68 Deep Cameo. Well struck and a blazing gem. Only 735 minted. Clean as a whistle, as one would look forward to from the astounding Proof 68 grade; however, what truly breaks this Barber Quarter free from other Proofs is the swirling mirror finish luster that rolls around each side At the same time that the luster blossoms, substantial frosted relief detail reveals itself on the highpoints of Liberty, the eagle, and the tops of the stars, date digits and lettering of this extraordinary example. Pop 7; 2 finer, 1 in 68+, 1 in 69 (PCGS # 95684) .

1903. PCGS graded Proof 65. CAC Approved. PQ. Lovely toning on both sides. Only 755 struck. A lustrous example that has nice reflective brilliance under the toning. Those who are expecting the design left by the dies to be robust and clear-edged, take heart, since this is an exceptional coin and not weak in the slightest. It is, in fact, very bold. 1906. PCGS graded Proof 64. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Only 675 minted. Light blue and gold toning. Long a popular series with collectors, Barber Quarter Proof Set collecting is still a major challenge in finding attractively toned specimens like this. No Proof date in the series, however, can be considered rare or expensive, which is why assembling a date set inspires many collectors to do so. Pop 44; 84 finer (PCGS # 5692) .

1912. PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo. Only 700 minted. A fully white gem cameo. For those who cannot live without high quality and associated grade rarity wrapped up in a single unit, this 1912 Barber Proof is for you. The quality of this piece is expressed in its surface. Deep, flowing, impairment-free mirrors on the obverse & reverse are met with cameo frosted devices giving this Superb Gem 67 a pronounced cameo impact which is indicated on the PCGS holder. This is one of the finer Proof Barbers of its year. Those serious to bid should not let this Lot slip away.

While the Barber dime coinage carries a simple wreath reverse, on the quarter and half dollar, a heraldic eagle, similar to the one on the Great Seal of the United States, is the central motif, with "QUARTER DOLLAR" or "HALF DOLLAR" and the mint mark (if any) located beneath it. As on the Great Seal, the eagle holds a banner in its beak reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and the amount of the motto visible is helpful to numismatic graders in determining the condition on circulated specimens.
