Lot 4045
France, Second Zionist Congress Medal (1898) by Samuel Beer. The rare 2nd Zionist Congress commemorative medal is 63mm, 111 gm. It was designed by Samuel Friedrich Beer, and struck in bronze in Paris. Beer (1846-1912) was a well known Jewish sculptor and medallist, and a personal friend of Herzl. Daniel Friedenberg considers this medal to be "one of the most important Jewish medals ever struck". The obverse depicts an allegorical figure pointing to a new dawn/horizon for the Jewish people, and the reverse features a Biblical quotation (in stylized Hebrew), a prophecy, from the Book of Ezekiel (Yekhezkel) "Behold and I take the sons of Israel from among the nations and I have brought them to their land."

This example has a problem-free obverse with no signs of rubbing, but there are scattered dings in the reverse field. Overall, an attractive and very desirable example of one of the most important Judaic medals ever made.
Estimated Value $850 - 1,000.

Lot 4077
Great Britain. Crown, 1691. S.3433; Dav-3780; ESC-82. William and Mary. I over E in GVLIELMVS. With a pleasing light grey and golden tone over fully lustrous surfaces, this is an exceptionally well struck coin and a very rare type. The overstrike is nice and clear. William and Mary Crowns are usually poorly made (the die detail is especially shallow) and to find a specimen in top grade is a rare event. This piece, from the first of only 2 years of issue, has never seen circulation and surely deserves a home in a top quality collection of English Crowns. Nicer than the Cheshire Collection and Millennia Collection, the EDJ Van Roekel and the Norweb William and Mary Crowns, this is also the finest known example of an extremely rare variety. Catalogues at £6000 in XF (near to $10,000)- unpriced in higher grades. NGC graded MS-61.

* William and Mary were spouses and first cousins. Their joint reign started in February 1689 after they were offered the throne by the Convention Parliament, summoned by William after his successful invasion of England in 1688. King James II (Mary's father and William's uncle) had fled the country. The joint monarchs signed the English Bill of Rights in 1689. This ended many centuries of tension between the monarchy and parliament and put to rest the theory that Britain would become a Roman Catholic nation once again. Mary died in 1694 and William ruled alone until his death in 1702.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.

Lot 4078
Great Britain. Commemorative Medal, 1691. Eimer 332, Medallic Illustrations Vol 1 4/158. This large silver (59mm diam) medal celebrates the return of William III to his native Holland. Obverse, armoured, draped bust of king right. Possibly the finest numismatic portrait of the king. Reverse, the King is represented as the Sun, which revives and refreshes the failing spirits of the Dutch people after the king's return. A rare medal with a catalogue value of £3,200 in XF (apprx $5,300) with no price given for higher grades. NGC graded In jumbo holder, MS-61.

* William of Orange was married to Mary, the daughter of the increasingly unpopular James II of England. In 1688 William received (from Danby, Compton and five important members of the British nobility) a secret invitation to travel to England with sufficient force to oust King James. With incredible energy and ability William collected an army of Germans, Dutch, Swedes, Swiss and French Huguenots. He persuaded the Dutch republic to support him, and landed an army of around 15,000 soldiers at Torbay - the largest and most disciplined force to invade England. James' army was larger but its morale was patchy, and some of its best commanders deserted.
By Christmas, James and his infant son had fled to France, and William and Mary were provisionally in charge of government, and were declared King and Queen in May 1689.
Ruling Britain from London became William II's priority, but by late January 1691 he felt secure enough to return to his country of origin for an eagerly anticipated visit -celebrated by this intricate medal.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

This deeply toned coin has a catalogue value of £1,750 (around $3000) in XF with no pricing for higher grades. NGC graded MS-63.

* The price of silver was high in the mid-18th century and although King George III ascended the throne in 1760, it was not until 1787 that the mint struck shillings bearing his portrait, in volume. The one exception was this 'Northumberland Shilling' a very small/rare issue undertaken by the Duke of Northumberland (Sir Hugh Percy) to celebrate his appointment as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Sir Hugh was one of the King's confidential advisers.
