Austria. 1883 Medal on the Relief of Vienna. Silvered bronze; 72mm; 136.2 grams. Signed by Anton Scharff and Josef Tautenhayn. Forrer-VI/39 where Tautenhayn's plaster is illustrated. Commemorates the Relief of Vienna, under seige by the Turks, after the Battle of Vienna on September 11-12, 1683, the allied forces being led by Poland's King Jan III. Obverse: Austrian arms surrounded by medallions, each with a major personality; Holy Roman Emperor, King Leopold I, the Hogmouth (1640-1658-1705), Polish King Jan III Sobieski (1624-1674-1696), Andreas von Liebenberg (1627-1683), Rudiger Count Starhemberg (1638-1701), Karl V, Duke of Lorraine (1643-1690), the presentation reminiscent of the family commemoratives of Russia and Bavaria. Reverse by Tautenhayn, with legend "Urbs Pro Orbe" (City for the World), a figural group shows Mars over a fallen Turk, before Austria and Justice, allegorical of the victory, considered to have saved not only Vienna, but all of Christian Europe.
