Sicily, Naxos, c. 425-415 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.74 g). Head right of Dionysios, hair bound with taenia ornamented with ivy. Reverse Silenos squatting, head left, holding kantharos and thyrsos; to left, ivy plant. Cahn 100 (plate V, V66/R82; these dies); Gulbenkian 232 (these dies); Jameson 677 (these dies); SNG München 761 (these dies); SNG Fitzwilliam 1113 (these dies). Large flan with underlying luster and lovely toning. Superb Extremely Fine.

Naxos was the oldest Greek colony on the island of Sicily. It was located on the east coast of the island, close to modern Taormina. In 404 BC, the city was razed by the tyrant Dionysios of Syracuse, so her coinage was quite limited. In fact, for this type, we know of only one obverse die being paired with five different reverse dies. Our coin is one of the very finest specimens known, struck upon an unusually large flan. The two casting spurs are prominent; each flan was first cast, adjusted for proper weight, then struck between hardened dies. The strength of strike was considerable, making every lock of hair clearly defined.

For decades now, more and more collectors have turned their eyes to the past. They hear the voices, and now and then, the music. History needs time to achieve a proper perspective and a more unbiased overview. Generations of numismatists, while reminding us that each and every coin has its story to tell, have grouped the most historical, the earliest, the rarest and, importantly, the most beautiful and inspiring Greek coins.

While these artistically compelling coins include those minted at Amphipolis and other city-states, a majority of the finest designs ever conceived and created were minted in Sicily. This particular tetradrachm we now offer is one of those coins - an unforgettable, first-water treasure of numismatic art.
Estimated Value $140,000 - 160,000.

Sicily, Syracuse. Dionysios I. Silver Decadrachm (43.2 g), 405-367 BC. Unsigned dies by Euainetos. Struck ca. 405-400 BC. Charioteer driving galloping quadriga left, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying right, crowning charioteer with wreath; in exergue, a military harness, shield, greaves, cuirass, and Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal spear; below, AΘΛA. Gallatin dies R.J.II/O.XXI; SNG ANS 375 (same dies). Excellent metal, slight double striking and lightly toned. Extremely Fine.

Amongst the most famous of all ancient Greek coins, the decadrachms of Syracuse were struck to finance the military ambitions of the tyrant, Dionysios I, who made Syracuse the most powerful of the western Greek city-states. Two master artists, Kimon and Euainetos, worked at the mint, and both sometimes signed their dies. Their styles are sufficiently distinct, however, that even on unsigned dies the hand of the engraver is readily apparent, as is the case with this coin by the artist Euainetos. Euainetos's coins were especially regarded in ancient times even as they are today, and served as inspiration for the coinage of a number of other cities throughout the Greek world.

Sicily, Siculo-Punic issue. Silver Tetradrachm (16.8 g), ca. 350-320/15 BC. Uninscribed type. Wreathed head of Arethusa left, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace. Excellent metal and wonderful style. Lovely iridescent tone. Extremely Fine.

This lovely Carthaginian tetradrachm was struck beginning in about 350/40 BC, thus more or less concurrent with the beginnings of the regular Carthaginian gold staters. The marked increase in Punic coinage at this time, coming after a hiatus of 50 or 60 years, met the needs of the Carthaginian state to pay for military operations on the island. This was specially the case after 344 BC when the Syracusans invited Timoleon of Corinth to become their leader. Timoleon rid Syracuse of the troublesome Dionysios as well as his nemesis, Hiketas I, the tyrant of Leontini, and then re-founded the city and established a democracy. All of this lead to a period of Greek revival on the island, which of course led to open conflict with Carthage.

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III the Great. Silver Tetradrachm (17.13 g), 336-323 BC. Paphos, ca. 322/1 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress; in tiny letters amongst the tufts of hair along the front rim of the lion's skin; NIKOKΛEOYΣ. Reverse : BAΣIΛEΩ[Σ] to left of scepter, AΛEΞANΔPO[Y] in right field, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, ΠAΦ monogram; below throne, grain ear. Price 3122; May 12-4. Carefully extended dies, boldly struck with incredible detail including the name of the Paphos king. Nearly Mint State.

This tetradrachm is part of a discrete issue that clandestinely bears the name NIKOKΛEOYΣ on the obverse. As the name is found on seven different dies of varying style, it cannot be the name of the artist. Thus, the inescapable conclusion is that it is the name of the king of Paphos, Nikokles. Nikokles is known to have subsequently struck tetradrachms in his own name, so exactly why he was so careful to hide his name on these coins is not known. According to Price, the issue was probably struck at the time he was allied with Ptolemy I in his war against the Cypriot cities of Kition and Marion. Later, ca. 310/9 BC after Ptolemy had gained control of the entire island, Nikokles intrigued with Antigonos Monopthalmos, but Ptolemy sent a force against him under Argaios and Kallikrates. The generals surrounded the palace and ordered Nikokles to commit suicide, which he did along with the rest of his family including his wife, daughters and two brothers.
