1922 Grant Dollar, With Star. PCGS graded MS-67. CAC Approved. Nice even golden toning. What is most in full view when we examine this handsome Grant Memorial Gold Dollar is its thick, rolling mint luster -- it swirls over each side unhindered by abrasions and free of even a trace of toning. A superb bright golden yellow coin of outstanding beauty and importance to the Commemorative collector as well as to any interested in general US gold coinage. From the luster, we next take stock of the details of Grant’s profile. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin was fully brought up by the dies. This issue is struck with and without a small star above Grant’s name. Pop 237; 6 finer, 5 in 67+, 1 in 68 (PCGS # 7459) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,600.

Lot 2058
1904 Lewis and Clark Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. Lovely rich golden toning. Only 10,025 minted. Glowing and exhibiting warm tones. A very pleasing example of this Commemorative Gold Dollar, the second such issue following the Louisiana Purchase coins of 1903. The luster is smooth, very choice, and suitably original. As for the devices, these were struck with plenty of power by the dies which imparted all design elements evenly, and showing clearly, unlike some where a few areas remain mushy (PCGS # 7447) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

Lot 2061
1903 Louisiana Purchase-McKinley Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63 Cameo. Rich golden toning. A Choice, painstakingly preserved example from a mintage of a mere 100 Proofs for each Louisiana Purchase design. This variety depicts the recently assassinated President William McKinley, who approved the Louisiana Purchase Exposition that was held in St. Louis in 1904. The gleaming warm yellow-gold surfaces exhibit mirror depth to the glassy fields and an appropriate degree of contrast. Sharply struck on obverse and reverse, devices cameo frosted. A rare opportunity for the Commemorative enthusiast whose collection goes beyond the usual scope to include some special strikings. Pop 1; 10 finer, 3 in 64, 4 in 65, 2 in 66, 1 in 66+ (PCGS # 87483) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.

Lot 2064
1915-S Panama-Pacific $2.50. PCGS graded MS-66 PQ. CAC Approved. A nice frosty gem. The centers are lustrous bright reddish-gold oscillating with deeper frosted luster near the peripheries. Far from the normal example of this issue is the respectable amount of detail throughout with no signs of weakness to the clothing that Columbia wears, nor on the scales of the seahorse. Small "S" mintmark to right of the date.

The 1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition was held at a time in our history when the art world was casting aside the constraints of its previous Victorian ways. Many new devices were being tested on America's coinage: matte proofing, rims without denticles, artistic lettering, textured fields, and the like. As can be seen, the coins struck for this expo, such as this handsome Quarter Eagle, incorporate some of these changes. Instead of a more traditional design, the artist proposed an unusual motif of Columbia seated on a mythological hippocampus, half-horse, half-sea serpent. The eagle, too, was rendered in a new way not seen before on an American production coin. It was modeled upon a similar eagle seen on one of the rare Pattern issues. Pop 427; 48 finer, 15 in 66+, 33 in 67 (PCGS # 7450) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.
