Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 396
1816 Braided Hair Cent. . N-2. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown and Del Bland graded AU-55. A nice example of this hoard variety, free from carbon and with only a few microscopic handling marks. Lovely, lustrous medium steel brown with a generous amount of faded mint red, the reverse with slightly iridescent steel blue overtones.
The die engraving on this variety resembles an "office boy" style, the date shows recutting and the reverse lettering is poorly placed with varying spaces between most of the letters in the legend. Impressive and well struck, this one should find a new home without any trouble.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
No pedigree information included, but probably purchased near the end of WWII.

Lot 397
1816 Braided Hair Cent. . N-2. PCGS graded MS-62 Red and Brown and Del Bland graded MS-63. One of the nicer examples of the Randall hoard variety despite a couple of very small nicks on the lower face and two more on a leaf above O in ONE. A trifle better struck on the forelock than usually seen and lacking the carbon spots. Mint red and brown, the reverse rotated 45 degrees to the right.
We note some very faint scratches around Liberty's eye and in the field before her face. Lovely color and appeal for this popular Randall Hoard cent. Rim crumbling over stars eight to ten, as usual.
Estimated Value $250 - 350.

Lot 399
1817 Braided Hair Cent. 13 stars. . N-14. PCGS graded MS-63 Red and Brown and Del Bland graded MS-62. Blunt striking as almost always seen on this variety, another from the Randall Hoard. Nearly full mint red just beginning to tone to brown but on the obverse are a few nicks and light carbon is prominent on both sides.
The carbon spots are present on both sides, but they are not too distracting. What is remarkable, is the amount of original mint red present. This coin literally glows with fiery red, and is very attractive as such.
Estimated Value $350 - 500.

Lot 400
1817 Braided Hair Cent. 15 stars. . N-16. PCGS graded AU-55 and Del Bland graded VF-30. Light chocolate brown, darker on most of the obverse, with a small dent on the face, two tiny nicks also on the face, and one other very small nick elsewhere on each side. A highly popular variety.
The small die break is very clear below Liberty's ear, but the advanced rim crumbling is not yet present. In feverish demand for the 15 star obverse die, with a significant premium paid for coins approaching mint state on this variety. Here is one that has been off the market for a very long time.
Estimated Value $500 - 750.

Sharpness of Very Fine-35 but near star eleven is a nick, opposite the neck is a smaller one and through ES, MERIC and the wreath below is some fine porosity. Medium dark chocolate brown with a reddish orange color where the porosity was worked on. Early die state, no die crack through the first S in STATES to wreath and only a faint crack through the tops of ST slightly over half way to D.

Lot 433
1824/2 Braided Hair Cent. . N-1. PCGS graded EF-45 and Del Bland graded VF-25. A very desirable cent for the grade despite a small, light dent below the chin, a small, light spot of raised corrosion between stars nine and ten and three microscopic nicks on the obverse. Medium dark chocolate brown.
This is a really outstanding cent, one that is nearly impossible to locate in high grades. The surfaces are a delight, without detracting problems of any kind. Later die state with most of the encircling reverse crack present on this example. We anticipate serious collector bidding when a choice coin like this crosses the block.
Over the decades we have consistently noticed that "choice" collector coins always bring strong prices, often well over the current "market" price guides. Yet, quite the opposite is true for "problem" coins, with defects or damage, even with an accurate net grade, coins with problems often bring less than the current "market" price for a coin without similar defects. Quality sells for quality prices, while off-quality pieces realize discounts. Here with the Benson collection, a number of outstanding coins are offered, coins that collectors will appreciate, long after the price is paid to obtain them.
Estimated Value $700 - 1,000.

Sharpness of About Uncirculated-50 but there are areas of fine corrosion on the reverse and the face has been lightly smoothed. Cleaned and retoned to a pleasing, glossy darkish steel color with traces of red, mostly on the reverse.
The obverse of the coin is generally pleasing in appearance and strike, with some hints of lighter colors in the devices. Boldly impressed by the dies, the stars all show radial lines, and Liberty's curls are crisply defined. Liberty's cheek shows the faintest trace that it was touched up a bit, notable in the slight change in surface quality as compared with the surrounding devices.
