(1680) London Elephant Token Halfpenny. Thick planchet. PCGS graded MS-66 Red And Brown. This is the Eliasberg coin, and is superbly preserved. Magnificent brown luster on both sides, with ample traces of original mint red adhering near the devices. Boldly struck from an early die state, and certain to please the advanced specialist. As stated in the Eliasberg catalog, numerous fine die finish lines are present. Probably the finest known of this popular issue, and certainly worthy of the finest colonial collection.
It is thought that the motto GOD PRESERVE LONDON refers to the fire and epidemic which swept that City in 1666. These were probably struck a few years later, and possibly as late as 1694 when the dated Elephant tokens were struck. Breen estimates that 1672 is a good guess for the time of their coining.
This is, of course, the finest graded by PCGS, with a single coin graded as such. A couple of others are graded in lower mint state grades, but most are found in lower circulated grades. This is without a doubt, one of the finest colonial coins, of any type, to survive! A foremost opportunity for the specialist.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 15,000.

1794 Liberty Cap Half Cent. PCGS graded AU-55. Here is a very nice coin overall, the surfaces show only light wear, and the devices are sharply struck. We note a small planchet void on the rim below the Y of LIBERTY. There is a short scratch below the L of LIBERTY into the hair, and there are hints of minor red areas in the back of the hair curls and below the nose. As to the color, this coin is medium brown and the surfaces are very nice for the grade overall. Struck from cracked dies, which also show multiple clash marks on both sides. If you demand a very high grade coin for your variety set, then take the opportunity to view this excellent coin.

1795 Liberty Cap Half Cent. Lettered edge, with pole. MS-63 Brown. This is the famous Brobston/Reale coin. The surfaces have been carefully cleaned and expertly retoned at some time in the distant past, and the coin is now light brown in color. It is struck slightly off-center to the lower right on the obverse, and is identifiable by a small planchet flake between the ball and loupe of the 9 in the date, and three shallow marks on Liberty, one on her jaw line, another in the middle of her neck, and the last below her ear. Excellent rims on both sides, with a tiny tick below the bust tip on the obverse. The reverse devices, fields and rims are superbly preserved. All is well struck too, with full details on Liberty's curls and the upper leaf tips. Obviously this is a very special coin with a wonderful pedigree, and presents a great opportunity for astute numismatists.
Estimated Value $15,000-UP.

The obverse has numerous tiny spots and boasts full red color, on the reverse, there are some minor specks, and the color is slightly dull from an ancient cleaning. Moderate hairlines are visible in the fields. All proof half cents are rare, this one has a total of around 18 known of the die pairing, and few are this nice. Rare and highly desirable.

1848 Braided Hair Half Cent. Restrike. PCGS graded Proof 66 Red And Brown. One of the finest graded of this rare issue, this coin boasts deep steel brown color with some original red near the devices. Boldly struck and very well preserved, the fields and devices don't have the usual problems found on early copper. Slight weakness is noted on the upper wreath and some of the letters are not as fully struck as one might expect. One for the type collector who wants a truly superb example of this scarce early proof issue.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.

1852 Braided Hair Half Cent. Restrike. PCGS graded Proof 66 Red And Brown. Another superb early proof half cent, this one has deep mahogany shades with red near the devices. The surfaces are very well preserved, and this is one of just two coins graded this high by PCGS for the variety, there are none graded higher. Doubling is noted on the T of CENT, and this is the "small berries" variety. While one of the more available of these rare proof issues, this is certainly one of the very best!
Here is a beautiful coin and one that has a significant pedigree and can claim its rightful place as one of the finest known. Die State I, perfect dies, 79.8 grains according to the Eliasberg author.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.

According to EAC specialists, the finest known is an AU-55 specimen with three grading AU-50. The Robinson Brown example we sold in September 30, 1986 graded VF-20. This stunning Liberty Cap cent is certain to stir considerable bidder interest.

1817 Braided Hair Cent. 15 stars. Sharpness of EF-40 but net of VF-20. Here is a rare opportunity to purchase a "fun" coin. Not only is it an example of the ever-popular fifteen star obverse, but its the Newcomb plate coin (obverse and reverse) in his famous variety book on the series. When examined with a glass, numerous hairline scratches are visible on both sides, especially before Liberty's face in the field. These scratches are old and toned over nicely. Struck a touch off-center on the reverse, toward 1:30.

Note that sharpness in the strike, with full details on the upper devices. All the digits in the date show recutting low.
