Indian Head Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1286
1886 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 65 Red and Brown. A rare coin in this grade that boasts nearly full red on both side, with a faint fingerprint or something similar on the lower obverse and central reverse. The variety 2 is much scarcer than the variety 1, note how the last feather on the headdress points between the CA of AMERICA. Trivial hairlines in the fields, and a tick on Liberty's cheek. Rare and important.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,500.

1886 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. In mid 1886, a new master hub was prepared for making obverse dies, on the earlier style the lowest feather pointed to the space between IC in AMERICA, on this new hub the last feather points between CA. Struck from worn dies. Free of spots or other detriments, and nearly a gem.
Estimated Value $300 - 350.

Lot 1289
1888/7 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded Good-6. This is one of the rarest overdates in United States numismatics. Apparently, the obverse die broke early, forming a large die cud over UNITED, which terminated the obverse die use. This overdate was discovered by James F. Ruddy around 1970, and very few have turned up in the last 30 years. PCGS, for all their years of grading have only recorded two coins graded in the VG-VF grade range, with 3 graded higher. PCGS does not report coins graded below VG in their Population Reports, so this piece just misses recording there by a single grade point. The tail of the 7 is distinct below the last 8 in the date, confirming the overdate.
To show how rare this overdate is, none have been auctioned in the last 5 years, and we're not even certain how far we'd have to go to locate a sale! With the extremely high interest in Indian cents, and in particular the various die varieties, we expect significant interest when this small group of 1888/7 overdates crosses the block. This is the best of the three coins offered, so bid accordingly. It is estimated that between 33 and 64 exist by The Cherry Picker's Guide so don't expect to find one of these unattributed.
Estimated Value $600 - 700.

1894. Doubled date. Snow-1, FS1-011, Rarity-5. PCGS graded MS-64 Red and Brown. The date is boldly double cut in the die, listed in the Guide Book as a separate variety and extremely popular with collectors. Rare in mint state grades, this near gem should excite the advanced numismatist who has been searching for a really lovely example. In color, the mint red is fading to brown, and the surfaces are pristine, showing few signs of handling and no spots on either side. Research shows that only 15 of this date have been graded Mint State 64 or higher, and this important die blunder is rarely offered for sale, especially so nice.
Estimated Value $1,200-UP.

(No date), Indian cent, struck off-center about 15%. PCGS graded Fine-15. Fragments of the date show, and it appears that 190 is visible in part, but the final digit is missing. Well struck with some of LIBERTY still visible. Indian cent errors are far more difficult to obtain than Lincoln cent errors. There are some minor marks around the date, and we note heavier than usual dirt around the devices.

1903 Indian Head Cent. A most interesting item that is mounted in a custom frame with a photograph of a native American chief. Below is a small card which states "First cent coined/in 1902/at the new U.S. Mint/Phila." and signed John Landis/Coiner. The cent is proudly mounted at the center of the card, and appears to be mint state, with brown toning and slightly wood grain in appearance. The reverse is not visible in the frame. A fascinating item which no doubt has quite a provenance, originally in the collection of Wayte Raymond, the famous American dealer.

1903. Double struck with 2 dates! PCGS graded Fine-15. One of the most amazing errors in this collection, the first strike was perfectly centered, before the coin was fully ejected, the dies struck it again, this time 85% off-center, but most curiously all four digits plainly show at the top right of the obverse! On the reverse, the top of the shield also shows on the lower right from the off-center strike.
As to the condition, the coin retains fragments of most of the letters of LIBERTY, and there are a couple of small surface marks to note, one deep dig near the U of UNITED, and there is a short scratch above ER of AMERICA, both of these surface problems are minor when one considers how spectacular the error is. Evenly toned a medium brown throughout.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
