Aleichem, Shalom (Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich) (1859-1916) Yiddish author, humorist and playwright from Ukraine. I am sorry for my late reply, which was caused by a workload in these special days, and also a severe case of the flu that has come upon me during a short visit overseas. Pardon me. It was with great sorrow that I read the saddening news about the death of Fighter Yakutiel Dobrovich, RIP. Ben-Gurion, David (1886-1973) Zionist statesman, political and military leader. First Prime Minister of Israel (1948-53, 1955-63), often called "Father of the Nation."

Autograph Letter Signed in Hebrew, 2pp, 8½ x 4¾", Sde-Boker, 1 Dec. 1968. Fine; file holes in margins. Addressed to Moshe Soroka, general manager of the Histadrut [trade union] for healthcare clinics. Ben-Gurion writes: "I have not shown my appreciation for naming the nursing school next to the hospital in Beer-Sheva after my Pola [Ben-Gurion's late wife]…believe me it was not due to lack of appreciation…for months after the passing of Pola I was deeply depressed and in addition I was burdened with completing the writing of 20 years of the state of Israel…I do not believe that I deserve anything being named after me for the things I did in my life. The truth is, and many cannot understand it, that whatever I did, I did out of deep inner need and I do not believe anyone deserves any gratitude or prize. However, Pola was not a Zionist when I fell in love with her…she did not hesitate for a moment to settle in Eretz Israel…even though I told her Israel was a primitive place compared to the USA….she never hesitated for a moment…when I told her in the end of 1953 that I would like to live at least a few years in the Negev. She agreed to come with me to Sde-Boker even though she had to leave her children and friends…I don't know if there was ever a wife more devoted and loyal to her husband than Pola was and she undoubtedly deserves being remembered forever. You have done a great and wonderful thing naming the nurse hospital after her (she herself was a nurse until we came here) and a school in Beer-Sheva at that. I was told you are in favor of nationalizing all healthcare clinics…that is my opinion as well and I wish the Histadrut will understand that the state and entire nation come first…". Six months after writing this letter Ben-Gurion made his first state visit to the hospital which is now called "Soroka Medical Center." A beautiful expression of Ben-Gurion's love and devotion for his deceased wife.

Ben-Gurion, David. Letter signed ("D. Ben-Gurion") as Defense Minister, on official letterhead with Israel's state seal, in Hebrew, 1p, 7¾ x 6", April 4, 1955. To Prime Minister Moshe Sharett in Jerusalem. In full: "Dear Moshe, Arrogant and contemptuous words were heard being directed against the Chief of Staff, Moshe Dayan. I must point out, I have full confidence in the man, I know and appreciate his individual virtues and attributes and they are: a devotion exceeding all bounds to his demanding duty and obligations and to his responsible assignment in the army, as well as an absolute loyalty to the State's authorized institutions. With great respect, D. Ben-Gurion." Fine; two punch holes at right margin affect nothing.

Ben-Gurion was very protective of his young protégé Moshe Dayan, whom he considered in many ways to be a younger version of himself. When Ben-Gurion returned as prime minister in 1955, conflict between Ben-Gurion and Sharett led to Sharett's resignation as foreign minister.

Dayan, Moshe (1915-1981) Israeli military leader and statesman; he played a key role in four wars and helped negotiate the Israel-Egypt peace treaty. As the fourth Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (1953-58), he became a fighting symbol to the world of the new state of Israel. He went on to become Defense Minister and later Foreign Minister of Israel.

Autograph manuscript, written in Hebrew, 6pp, 11¾" x 8¼", blue ink on yellow tissue paper, n.p., n.d. (c. 1955-1965). Untranslated. Rough draft of Dayan's speech regarding the scandalous Lavon Affair. In this incredible document Dayan focuses on his relations with the Israeli Defense Force and the political echelon between the Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Chief of Staff.

In 1954, the Israeli secret service set up a spy ring in Egypt, with the purpose of blowing up U.S. and British targets. The intent was to blame the terrorist acts on Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser and, consequently, alienate the U.S. and Britain from Egypt and Nasser. The spy ring was run by AMAN (army intelligence), not the superbly professional Mossad, and the ring was caught and exposed when incendiary bombs went off prematurely in the pocket of one of the ring members. The Lavon Affair broke in July of 1954, and it turned out to be disastrous for Israel in several ways: Israel lost significant standing and credibility in its relations with the United Kingdom and the United States that took years to repair and the political aftermath caused considerable political turmoil in Israel that affected the influence of its government. He likewise sells on commission, Loan-office Certificates, and all other Kinds of Merchandise…. "

Accompanied by a Report from the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, made to the 30th Congress, First Session of the House of Representatives, dated April 26, 1848, 3pp. acknowledging that claims made by Salomon's legal representative (he died in 1785) are legitimate, that "…during the war of the revolution [Solomon] largely contributed of his pecuniary means toward carrying on the war--assisting the agency of finance by frequent loans of money… and in contributing to the support and sustenance of many eminent men of that time [including Madison, Jefferson, Randolph, and others], engaged in the struggle for independence. And that, of all the moneys advanced by Haym Salomon no evidence exists of any payments by the government of the United States in discharge of their obligations to him; and…no such payment or payments were ever made to the widow or children of the aforesaid." Solomon, Haym (1740-1785) Polish-born Jewish immigrant to America who played an important role in financing the Revolution. Drawn early to the Patriot side, he was arrested by the British as a spy in 1776, then pardoned and used by the British as an interpreter for their German troops. Salomon, meanwhile, helped prisoners of the British escape and encouraged German soldiers to desert. He was arrested once again in 1778 and sentenced to death, but managed to escape to Philadelphia, where he resumed his career as a broker and dealer in securities. He became broker to the French consul and paymaster to French troops in America.

Congress had no powers of direct taxation and was forced to borrow money from the French and Dutch governments. In 1781, when Congress appointed Robert Morris superintendent of finances and Morris established the Bank of America, he depended on patriots like Salomon to subscribe to the bank, to find purchasers for government bills of exchange, and to lend their own money to the government. Salomon brokered bills of exchange for the American government and extended interest-free personal loans to members of Congress.

Solomon was an influential member of Philadelphia’s Mikveh Israel congregation, founded in 1740. He helped lead the fight to overturn restrictive Pennsylvania laws barring non-Christians from holding public office. Salomon died penniless in 1785, never having been repaid for his loans to Congress.

Cut signature on a ¼ x 2 1/8" slip of paper. Matted with an image of Solomon, a name plaque and a large biographical plaque and framed to an overall size of 21¾ x 19¼". A rare and important signature.

An Original Map From The 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. The Israel-Egypt peace treaty was signed in Washington, D.C., in a ceremony on the White House lawn, on March 26, 1979, sixteen months after Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's historic 1978 visit to Israel and the subsequent Camp David Accords, negotiated between Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin with the mediation of U.S. President Jimmy Carter. President Sadat and Prime Minister Begin were consequently awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize.

The basic tenets of the treaty were the mutual recognition of each country by the other, the cessation of the state of war that had existed between them since 1948, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Sinai Peninsula and its return to Egypt. Egypt thus became the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel, a step for which President Sadat would be assassinated (6 Oct. 1981).

"Annex II International Boundary" is a 67½" x 42" map of Sinai showing the recognized international boundary between Egypt and Israel. This map, which belonged to someone who took part in the Camp David negotiations, was signed in Washington, D.C. on 25 March 1979 by the diplomats, one for Israel and one for Egypt, who were assigned the task of preparing it; Alfred S. Gilbertson, Jr. signed as a witness. The map is in fine condition except for a couple of small tears at fold intersections. A unique opportunity to own a piece of this historic treaty.
