1804 S-266b R5 G4. A few points sharper but covered with fine to moderate roughness. No marks or verdigris. Lightly burnished and retoned a partially glossy chocolate and olive brown. The date is weak but complete and easily readable, and the legends are complete. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a cud break at RTY but none at MERI.

1805 S-267 R1. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous steel brown and chocolate with frosty tan faded down from mint red in protected areas. This cent offers great eye appeal, but it is not quite perfect. There is a hairline scratch in the field close before the neck, a microscopic hairline down the neck, and some dark crud nestled into the protected areas of the wreath under UN in UNITED. MDS, Breen state III, with dull die clashmarks on both sides. Called AU55 by Bland; Noyes photo #24201. Our grade is AU58. The attribution and Ralls provenance is shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only MS example graded by PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 36427) .

1805 S-267 R1 VF20. Sharpness EF40 or a bit better with traces of minor roughness and verdigris on both sides and several light scratches on the obverse. The best identifying marks are a dull scrape on the rim under the 18 and a small rim nick over the second T in STATES. Mostly glossy dark steel and olive brown mixed with reddish chocolate. Sharply struck EDS but not quite the earliest, Breen state II, with crisp die clashmarks on both sides.

  Trio of 1805 Cents. Includes S-267 R1 VG8 net VG7 for light scratches, S-268 R3 VF20 net VG8 for light corrosion, and S-269 R1 Pointed 1 VF30 net VG10 for light corrosion. All have a clear date and complete legends. A "complete set" of 1805 die varieties. Lot of 3 coins.

Lot 662
1805 S-268 R3. PCGS graded VF-30. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive brown with underlying frost in the fields and protected areas, especially on the reverse. The surfaces look nice to the unaided eye but a glass reveals uniform extremely faint granularity. No verdigris, and the only marks are two small nicks under the right foot of the A in STATES. A decent example of a variety that is difficult to find in high grade. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net VF20. (PCGS # 1510) .

1805 S-268 R3 VF20+. Ten points sharper but there are areas of microscopic roughness on otherwise smooth, glossy surfaces. The notable areas of roughness are in the hair left of the shoulder and around F-AM, but the roughness is not distracting. Glossy olive brown and chocolate mixed with lighter steel brown on the obverse and reddish steel brown on the reverse. No contact marks. LDS, Breen state III, with a bulge at ED-S.

1805 S-269 R1 Pointed 1 F15. Five points sharper, maybe better, but there are traces of microscopic roughness on both sides. No verdigris, only minor contact marks, including a light rim bruise just right of the Y in LIBERTY and a rim nick right of the bust tip. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy light chocolate mixed with dark reddish olive on the obverse and light greenish olive on the reverse. MDS.

A pair of microscopic pinpricks just right of the date and a small rim nick at the second T in STATES are the best identifying marks. MDS, Breen state III. The die clashmarks are clear but there is no bulge in the field left of the lowest curl. Our grade is VF30+, close to VF35. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label. Pop 2; 8 finer at PCGS. 1807/6 S-272 R4+ Overdate Small 7 over 6 AG3. Several points sharper but lightly corroded on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. Dark scale covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, but the devices are clear. The date and legends are complete and easily readable in spite of the roughness and scale. Far from perfect but still an acceptable example of this rare "Redbook" variety.

1807/6 S-273 R1 Overdate Large 7 over 6. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Attractive lustrous light bluish olive brown and steel with traces of faded mint red on both sides. The only marks are a couple small nicks on the mouth and a swipe of reddish chocolate toning on the rim at LIB and to the left. LDS, Breen state IV early. There is a clearly defined rim cud break over ST in STATES, but it has not extended to over the adjacent A. Called MS60 and tied for CC#6 in the Bland census. Noyes photo #23926. Our grade is MS60. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer, 1 in 64, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 36442) .

The sharpness is a bit better than the assigned grade, but there are a few light nicks scattered over both sides, none notable but too many for the sharpness grade. Glossy chocolate brown and steel with slightly darker chocolate toning in protected areas. E-MDS, Breen state II. The die clashmarks are clear but there is no bulge left of the lower curls. Nicely struck except for weakness on the bust tip and opposing area at OF on the reverse. The overdate feature is bold. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label. Pop 2; 11 finer at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 36442) .

1807 S-276 R1 Large Fraction F15. Ten points sharper but there are some light contact marks on the obverse, including faint hairline scratches on the portrait, nicks in the field behind the portrait, and a light rim bruise at the U in UNITED. In addition there is a patch of very fine roughness on the bust. No verdigris. Looks better than it might sound. E-MDS, Breen state II. Minor crumbling shows in the dentils over LIBE. Struck with the obverse slightly misaligned to K-3 and the reverse rotated 60 degrees CCW. The date is bold and the legends are strong.
