1800 S-201 R4+ G5. Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel. No roughness or verdigris and just a couple trivial contact marks. A tiny pinprick close under the tip of the nose is the best identifying mark. LDS with strong swelling that effectively obliterates STA, ES, and AME on the reverse. The date is clear and the legends are complete (other than those areas affected by the swelling). Very nice for the grade.

Lot 610
1800 S-202 R4+ VF20. Sharpness VF35 but the field before the portrait was abraded to remove some scratches, then retoned dark olive and steel. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and the toning is a choice glossy chocolate brown. Traces of mint frost show in protected areas on the reverse. LDS, Breen state VI. The die failure at the lower curls is severe but not quite terminal, and strong swelling affects much of the legend on the upper half of the reverse. Called VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#7 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VG10 and tied for CC#12, his photo #24006.

The date is complete and the legends are bold where not affected by the swelling.

1801 S-222 R1. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC Approved. Glossy light to medium brown with light olive brown toning on the devices and frosty golden tan toning in protected areas. A beautiful cent, just a few tiny ticks from flawless. The best identifying mark is a tiny planchet void on the right bottom of the numerator in the fraction. EDS, Breen state I, prior to any rim cud breaks on the obverse. Called AU55 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 and CC#3, his photo #23949. Our grade is AU55. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36251) .

1802 S-236 R1. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous light to medium brown with darker brown toning on the highpoints of the devices and hints of faded mint red in protected areas on the obverse. The only marks are a few small puffs of darker bluish olive brown toning on both sides, mostly on the reverse. MDS, Breen state V early, with two die cracks on the upper part of the reverse and die clashmarks on both sides. Excellent eye appeal. Called "Finest seen and possibly FK (Finest Known)" by Doug Smith. He also added on his envelope, which is included with the lot "If ever there was a golden biscuit, THIS IS IT!!!" Called MS60+ and CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU55 and tied for CC#2, his photo #23343. Our grade is MS60+. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. 1803 S-264 R4+ Large Date with Small Fraction G6. Slightly sharper but the surfaces are covered with very fine roughness. The obverse is also covered with myriad faint scratches hidden in the toning, and there are a few more light scratches inside the wreath. The only other marks are a shallow pit in the field above the hair ribbon and a couple tiny rim nicks off the bust tip. Retoned a rather glossy dark olive brown and steel. In spite of the defects, this piece offers nice eye appeal for the grade. The date is bold and the legends are clear, although the denominator is a bit weak and STA has been obliterated by significant die failure. VLDS, Breen state III late. The die cracks on the upper half of the reverse are strong and the retained cud break at STA is bold. In addition the opposing area at the curls and field under the hair ribbon is clearly bulged. These dies had failed badly. A decent example of this popular "Redbook" variety.
