1797 S-143 R5 Stemless Wreath VF25. Sharper by at least 5 points but there are too many light contact marks for the sharpness grade. The obverse shows numerous light nicks and faint hairlines, none notable but too many to ignore, and there are a few rim bruises on the reverse, the strongest of these at ED in UNITED. The color is an attractive glossy medium chocolate brown with lots of frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas, especially on the reverse. M-LDS, Breen state III, with fine die clashmarks on the reverse. The dies were not in correct axial alignment (the die faces were not parallel) creating a bold impression at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse with a weaker strike evident at the bottom of the obverse and top of the reverse. Breen mentions in his "Remarks" for the variety (encyclopedia, page 432) that he had seen an example in this die state that displayed similar axial misalignment. Called VF25 and CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#4, his photo #34249. Either way this is an important cent.

1798 S-144 R5+ Style I Hair, Large 8 VG10. Glossy chocolate brown with lighter chocolate toning covering the devices and darker chocolate in protected areas. Nice for the grade, especially to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals some minor contact marks. The notable ones are light, ancient scratches hidden in the toning on both sides and a small rim nick under the lowest curl. M-LDS, Breen state III late. The reverse is heavily buckled, the die crack through the top of OF is strong, and the terminal crack through ES is just starting to show. An impressive example of this very rare variety; called "A famous coin and one of the few aesthetically pleasing pieces--an aristocrat" by Dr. Ralls on his collection envelope. The C. Douglas Smith envelope (which also accompanies this lot) documents some of the history of this cent. He says "Lot 180, DuPont sale, 9/24/54, @$140. To DWL @ $500 several years later, thence to Robbie Brown. Regained 10/20/75 with 3 Grovers, from DWL in trade for the Proskey-Hines-WHS S-144. DWL had secured the DuPont S-144 from RSB as a stipulated replacement for the Proskey-Hines-WHS piece, which, in turn, was regained from DWL in a 15-Grover deal on Xmas day 1977." Doug got all this on a single 2x2 envelope, and FYI, a "Grover" is $1000. Dr. Ralls obtained the coin from Doug Smith in what Phil called "a blockbuster trade" that involved the finest known 1798 S-169, the second finest 1798 S-183, and "mucho cash." Like Dan Holmes says, it's all about the story. This cent is graded VG10 by Del Bland and Bill Noyes (his photo #23143) and it is tied for CC#3 honors with the ANS piece. An impressive cent with a great story.

Lot 498
1798/7 S-151 R3 Overdate 8 over 7. PCGS graded Fine-12. The "Close Overdate." Double Struck. The planchet is smooth (which is quite unusual for this variety) and it is toned a slightly glossy steel brown and light chocolate. The only marks are numerous nicks confined to the edge of the planchet (not visible from either side). MDS, perhaps Breen state VI, but that determination is difficult due to the effects of the bold double strike. The first strike was centered on the planchet but the coin failed to eject and was struck a second time about 10% off center to K-12 and rotated 10 degrees CCW. Strong evidence of the first impression is visible on both sides. (Be sure to look for Miss Liberty's lips in the field under her chin.) A great mint error. Our grade is VG10. The attribution, double-struck mint error, and Ralls provenance are noted on the PCGS label (PCGS # 35996) .
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
