1936-P,D,S Cincinnati Music Center Half Dollar Set. PCGS graded all MS-65. A beautiful Gem quality set. The Cincinnati Commemorative Half Dollar was brought into existence purely for monetary purposes. It is another of the period's Art Deco-style coins and features Stephen Foster on the obverse and a female figure holding a lyre on the reverse meant to personify Music. According to Breen-Swiatek, the date 1886 was chosen on the basis of no historical event whatever, in order to obtain a suitable year for convincing Congress to authorize the coin, "to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Cincinnati, Ohio, as a center of music and to commemorate Cincinnati's contribution to the art of music in the United States for the past 50 years"! Miss Constance Ortmayer designed the piece and her monogram is placed behind Foster's head in the left obverse field. A total 5,000 P-D-S sets were struck; they sold out at $7.75 per set. Prices soon rose in the aftermarket to $75 per set before a reaction set in and the speculating bubble burst (1936-37). Lot of 3 coins.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300.

1936 Elgin Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Most examples of this issue meet the MS65 or higher rating when certified. They were well executed and collectors seem to have admired them sufficiently that they took good care of them. Yet all the evidence from this piece shows that from tip to toe it is an superlative gem, definitely above average, with impressive mint brilliance over spotless, gleaming surfaces (PCGS # 9303) .
Estimated Value $220 - 230.

Centennial of the city of Elgin, Illinois, the obverse head is a copy of "Head of a Pioneer" by Trygve Rovelstad. The statue from which this head derives is represented on the reverse by the coin's artist who was also sculpted the statue. 1938-D Oregon Trail Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-67+ Star. CAC Approved. Lovely golden obverse toning hugs the rim and extends part way in along the upper margin. The surfaces are sleek and glowing with a healthy satin white color. There is no need to mention marks since this coin is resplendent in every aspect. Only 6,000 minted, a scarce year. (The odd "5" listing in the Guide Book of United States Coins "6,005" pertains to the 5 coins set aside for the annual Assay, which destroyed the coins therein to ascertain their purity, weight and integrity. A net 6,000 were sold to collectors in three-piece sets, P-D-S.). Pop 11; 42 finer (PCGS # 9349) .

1939-P,D,S Oregon Trail Half Dollar Set. PCGS graded all MS-67. A gorgeous Superb Gem set struck the final year of issue. Designs are by Laura Gardin Fraser. Many are of the opinion the Oregon Trail is one of the finest designs ever conceived for a commemorative issue. On the obverse, the artist chose an Indian with blanket and bow, his gesture seeming to warn any westbound travelers "So far and no further" (but more likely being a show of peace, as in "How!") On the reverse has been recreated a Conestoga wagon heading into the sunset. Oregons were struck sporadically from 1926 to 1939 at the various mints. Several issues have extremely low mintage, with the 1939-PDS trio being rarest of them all. 1939: Pop 90; 8 finer, 1939-D: Pop 151; 25 finer, 1939-S: Pop 92; 10 finer. Lot of 3 coins.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,600.

1921 Pilgrim Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-66. Nice light toning. Struck to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. Cyrus E. Dallin, a Boston sculptor, designed the coin. His incuse "D" initial below the elbow is often mistaken for a Denver mintmark. However, all were struck at the home mint in Philadelphia. Featured are a Pilgrim on the obverse and the Mayflower under full sail on the reverse. Net mintage included 152,000 dated 1920 and only 20,000 dated 1921. Pop 265; 40 finer (PCGS # 9360) .

1925 Stone Mountain Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66 Star. Lovely light obverse rainbow toning. Boldly original detail includes underlying frosted luster throughout. Struck to raise funds for the Stone Mountain memorial, the equestrian figures on the obverse depict, respectively, General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson and General Robert e. Lee. The thirteen stars around allude to the thirteen seceding Southern states, not the original colonies. On the reverse, the inscription MEMORIAL TO THE VALOR OF THE SOLDIER OF THE SOUTH alludes to the Confederate troops. Net mintage was 1,310,000. A number of Stone Mountains were counterstamped with various state names and serial numbers by promoters of the issue; others reached circulation (PCGS # 9378) .
