Franklin Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1198
1948. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. A hint of gold tone. Lustrous gem. The new Franklin half dollar design replaced the Walking Liberty halves in 1948. These were the last work of their designer, Mint Engraver John R. Sinnock who is also responsible for the Roosevelt Dime. At the request of Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross, Sinnock completed the obverse and reverse models only a few weeks before his death (May 1947). The half-dollar design was legally changeable any time after July 1, 1941, but escalated wartime demands for coins occasioned the delay (PCGS # 86651) .
Estimated Value $100 - 150.

1955. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bell Lines. CAC Approved. "Bugs Bunny" FS-401. There are only 35 different dates and mintmarks in the series, making it a relatively inexpensive collecting project. A widely-known variety is the 1955 "Bugs Bunny" half. This variety was caused by a die clash between an obverse die and a reverse die. The impact of the eagle's wings on the opposing die caused a marking outside of Franklin's mouth which according to some resembles buck teeth. The quality of half dollars struck by the Mint decreased in the late 1950s, caused by deterioration of the master die from which working dies were made for coinage. Pop 64; 8 finer in 66. (PCGS # 145358) .
Estimated Value $150 - 200.
