Lot 1075		1927-S. PCGS graded MS-66+FB. CAC Approved. Lovely partial obverse rainbow toning. Surprisingly more elusive in all higher grades than the lower mintage 1926-S, a Gem 1927-S Mercury dime with wholly split bands, rounded "McDonalds Arches" as the Mercury Dime collectors like to say. It should be considered a significant find. Since few high quality survivors exhibit fully defined crossbands, it should come as no surprise that this piece is the finest that PCGS has certified in this class. Both sides are thinly overlaid with toning and, beyond doubt, the features are pristine from center to rim. The rocking cartwheel satin mint bloom defines of the grade. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 4965) . When it first appeared in 1916: The Numismatist, referring to the Mercury Dime, said that the designs formed "the most attractive set of silver coins ever issued by this or any other government." The Winged Liberty Head dime in particular was widely praised. "The designer of the new dime has given us a youthful, even girlish head," The Numismatist said. "But the innovation on the obverse consists in adding wings to the head. This, of course, is not a new type for a coin; it is only new for the United States. The winged head was used almost exclusively on one side of the family or consular coins of the Roman Republic before the Christian era. "While the obverse carries us back to that time, the reverse reminds us even more forcibly of the coins of France and of the Napoleonic era of a little more than a hundred years ago. The fasces was a favorite emblem with the diecutters of that period, particularly with those who furnished the coins for some of the republics which sprang up almost overnight in Italy when Bonaparte waved the wand. This device is equally new for the United States. The designer has taken the laurel and oak wreath which has enclosed the words ONE DIME on the coin for lo! these many years and gracefully draped it about the ancient emblem of authority, producing a very pleasing effect." Fort Worth, Texas coin dealer B. Max Mehl described the Winged Liberty Head design as "quite an improvement on the old issue and equal in artistic beauty to any previous issue of dimes."
