1820. NGC graded MS-67. Famous "Office Boy" Reverse variety. Nice even toning on both sides. Housed in an Old Style Holder.

While this is a scarce variety, it is extremely popular among early dime collectors due to the spectacularly amateurish recuttings on the reverse die, commonly called the "Office Boy" reverse. Among other blunders, it shows the remains of an earlier punch between D and S in UNITED STATES; recutting on the third T, which is too high; recutting on the bottoms of S O in STATES OF; clear reworking on the M in AMERICA; and joining of the ME nearby. It is little wonder that--even in a Mint that was not overly concerned about blundered dies--this reverse is unique to this die marriage.

A stunningly beautiful example with superb sharp design features and full frosty luster. Attractive lightly toned surfaces with traces of pinkish magenta and light silvery iridescent blue toning. This is almost certainly among the finest examples of this die marriage known, and ranks among the top examples for the year 1820. A popular die variety due to the dramatic blunders on the reverse. Much of the legend is recut, including a nearly complete D between D and S, and sharp doubling on several other letters. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67 Star.
Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000.
JR-2, Rarity-3.

Lot 1056
1835. JR-1. Rarity 8 or Unique. NGC graded Proof 66. According to Early United States Dimes 1796 - 1837 published in 1984 by the John Reich Collectors Society, the 10¢ coins are quite common in the variety of JR-1 for business strikes (marked as R-1), but it is totally a different story for proof strikes. The authors indicate that they have seen only one type of proof, which matches the JR-4 variety depicted in their book (see the last paragraph on page 222 for the claim and see page 228 for the variety JR-4). Actually, all other 1835 10¢ proof coins offered to the public so far by the major auction firms match the JR-4 die variety, except this particular example. Upon close inspection, it is very easy to tell that the location of the scroll and the layout of Star-7 on this coin, which match the JR-1 variety, are totally different from the ones on the other coins of JR-4 variety. This could be the only specimen known in JR-1, even though NGC holder doesn't indicate the variety, the extreme rarity of this coin should be recognized. Besides probably being unique, this coin also exhibits a superlative degree of beauty. It has monster old-time toning on both sides, smooth problem-free surfaces, and most importantly gorgeous eye appeal emphasized by a vibrant bluish sparkle. A true gem with the highest grade at NGC for either variety. Pop 2 (for both varieties); none finer at NGC. One exceeding at PCGS in 67 (a JR-4 example).
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.
