1848 N-33 R5- VF25. Ten points sharper but covered with too many very tiny nicks for the sharpness grade. The die lines and cracks associated with this tough variety are clear.

1848 Small Date Fantasy Cent, Breen-1901. Rarity 7-. PCGS graded VG-10. Choice glossy light to medium brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the devices. Very nice for this relatively crude "cent" struck outside the mint using handmade dies that simulate the normal Federal large cent of that date. Smooth and quite attractive, just a few thin nicks on the portrait from flawless. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW from a perfect head-to-foot die orientation and there is no trace of an undertype or multiple strike (both of which are found on these pieces). This was Howard Newcomb's example of the variety, and only 4 were known when he acquired it in 1940. It is reasonable to assume he used this piece to describe the variety in his book on the cents of 1816-1857. Newcomb devoted two full pages in that book to describing the variety and the census of known examples at that time. A total of 11 can be traced today, but few of those are as problem-free as this piece. Our grade is VG7+, very close to VG8. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are shown on the PCGS Label.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

1849 N-22 R1. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Frosty mint red mellowing to light steel brown on the highpoints with 70% of the red remaining on the obverse and at least 85% of the bright mint color showing on the reverse. This cent offers exceptional eye appeal and is a borderline "RED." The only mark is a shallow scrape on the jaw. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #6). The die lines found at the inner curl in the earlier states are gone. While this variety is often found in mint state thanks to a small hoard, examples with this much mint color are extremely rare. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#9 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 5; none finer. (PCGS # 405686) .

1855 N-10 R1 Italic 55. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Very attractive lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with faded mint red covering the protected areas on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers both sides of this cent and it offers outstanding eye appeal. Choice frosty light olive and bluish steel with generous traces of faded mint color remaining on the reverse. The only marks are a shallow planchet void on the rim at star 12 and a tiny nick on the rim under star 13. EDS, die state b. Star #6 is very faint thanks to a die clog in that area (the so-called 12-Star die state). Minor clogging is starting to show on the bust tip and star 1 as that area of the die is accumulating debris as well. A beautiful example that is very sharply struck everywhere except for the clogs mentioned. Our grade is MS63+. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Population 3; none finer at PCGS. 1856 N-14 R1 Italic 5. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Frosty mint red fading to light steel brown with 75% of the mint color remaining. Essentially flawless, void of any notable spots, stains, or contact marks. The strike is above average for this variety, about as good as they come. The dies were not in perfect axial alignment when striking this variety (the die faces were not parallel) causing weakness on the coronet tip and on the stars above the head. These areas are slightly weak on this example, but the weakness is minimal. MDS, die state b. The short bar under the right side of the 8 is gone and the fields are covered with fine radial flowlines. A far above average example of this variety. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Population 1; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 406211) .
