1839 N-8 R1 Head of 1840. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. CAC Approved. Choice lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate brown faded down from mint red with mellowed red showing through in the fields and protected areas. Ample mint red remains to suggest this piece is close to deserving a "Red & Brown" designation. A truly beautiful, nearly flawless cent that offers exceptional eye appeal. The only marks are a small area of slightly darker toning nestled into the depression right of the Y in LIBERTY, a tiny nick in the center of the cheek, a short swipe of darker toning between the C & A in AMERICA, and a tiny planchet flake (as struck) left of the first S in STATES. Sharply struck E-MDS. The fields are smooth and the portrait is covered with fine concentric pantograph lines. A premium example of the Head of 1840 type. Called MS65 and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21907. Our grade is MS65. The only superior example known was a PCGS MS66RB, lot 456 in our 2/1/2009 sale of the Naftzger collection, and it brought $34,500 at the auction. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Population 1; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 37265) .
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

1842 N-7 R3 Large Date. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous original mint red shifting to steel and light olive on the devices, nearly half the red remaining, mostly on the obverse where the bright mint color dominates. Great eye appeal, but there are a few minor marks. These include a splash of dark steel toning (not carbon) from the top of the hair bun to star 9 and a less-obvious spot of olive toning at the right corner of the eye. The reverse has two minor, mint-made flaws: a small planchet flake over the right top of the N in UNITED and a faint planchet lamination crease up from the dentils under the wreath into the ribbon above where it fades away. Otherwise this cent is a solid gem. MDS, die state b early. There is fine die rust in the obverse fields and the points up from the top of the E in AMERICA are faint. The strong die line under that E is dull but still clear. In addition, the strike at the top of the ear is nearly full, about the best you ever get on this variety. Noyes photo #31023. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#2 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. And it comes with a nice provenance. Population 2; none finer at PCGS. 1844 N-5 R1 Repunched 844. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous bright original mint red fading to steel brown on the devices, at least 75% of the original color remaining. No spots, stains, or contact marks worthy of mention, but the strike is not perfect. There is weakness on the coronet over LIB, which is rather common for the die variety, but there are a few shallow low spots caused by debris on the obverse die, which is not as common. The notable low spots are in the field at the top of the bust and along the dentil tips around much of the obverse. All these defects are mint made, but they do adversely affect the overall eye appeal of this otherwise fantastic cent. E-MDS, die state b early, with a fine die crack through the top of UNITED extending to the dentils left of the U. None of the other die cracks associated with die state b has formed on this example. The repunching on the 844 is clear, strongest on the first 4. Called MS66 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31601. Our grade is MS64+, CC#1 in the Grellman census. 1846 N-7 R3. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous bluish steel and olive brown with 10% of the mint red showing on the obverse, 20% on the reverse. Excellent eye appeal, but there are a few marks. These include a speck of carbon nestled between the right points of star 7 and a collection of tiny ticks hidden in the field just right of the E in ONE. Nicely struck MDS, die state b. The reverse die remains uncracked but die lines have been added from the dentils to ES in STATES. The top of the stray 1 at the dentils under the right side of the 8 is visible. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label. Population 1; none finer at NGC. The only example graded by NGC for the variety.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

LDS, die state e, with three small but clearly defined rim cud breaks on the reverse (Newcomb's old #33). The repunching on the 7 is gone. Our grade is MS60. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but CC#3 of the dozen or so examples known with the three rim cuds. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 2 finer in 65. (PCGS # 37271) .

1847 N-38 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. Lustrous bright original mint red blending to steel brown on the highpoints, two-thirds of the original red remaining. No spots or stains. A thin horizontal nick high on the cheek and a tick on the chin are the only marks that keep this cent from an unqualified gem grade. Nicely struck with full radial lines in all the stars. M-LDS, die state c (Newcomb's old #16). The die lines at the inner curl are gone and a clear clashmark extends into the field from the lower edge of the neck. Called MS65 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31671. Our grade is MS64+, very close to MS65, and CC#2 in the Grellman census. This cent was called MS70 by Ted Naftzger when he owned it. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 1 finer in 65. (PCGS # 37359) .

1848 N-2 R2 Boldly Repunched 18. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. The obverse is lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel brown, especially above the head, and about two-thirds of the mint color remains. The reverse is lustrous bright original mint red just starting to fade on the highpoints; essentially full red. This cent is flawless in terms of spots or contact marks, but the inconsistent toning on the obverse is a distraction that keeps this cent from an even higher grade. MDS, die state b (Reiver's old #45), with crumbling nestled between the loops on the left side of the second 8. The points down from the base of the E in ONE are sharp. Our grade is consistent with the PCGS grade. Finest known for the die variety in the Grellman census. Population 1; none finer at PCGS. The only example graded by PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 406442) .
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1848 N-9 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC Approved. Frosty light olive and bluish steel brown with 15% of the mint red remaining. No spots or stains, but a glass reveals many small nicks on the portrait, none distracting but too many to ignore. The best identifying marks are a dull nick on the bust tip and a thin vertical struck-through line (caused by a tiny piece of thread or wire on the die) between the 1 & 8 in the date. E-MDS, die state a late. The fields are starting to display microscopic radial die flowlines but the die crack at ME in AMERICA has not formed. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and Ralls provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3; none finer. (PCGS # 406460) .
