Cadman, Charles Wakefield (1881-1946) American composer. Group of items signed by Cadman: one 10 x 8 in photo, four 7 x 5 in. photos, two programs of Cadman's music, and five 4½ x 2¾ in. cards. The 10 x 8 and one of the 7 x 5 in. photos also have long inscriptions. Additionally, there are three 10 x 8 in. unsigned photos of Cadman, which could be used for framed with the signed cards. Enesco, Georges (1881-1955) Romanian composer, violinist, pianist, conductor and teacher. Three autograph letters signed, one to French-Jewish composer Fernand Halphen, and two to his widow, all in French. The first, datelined 16, Rue de Bruxells, May 8, 1904, praises Halphen (1872-1917) for his opera Le Cor Fleuri. "…Permit me to tell you…how much I find your work charming, well-balanced, sincere. It is a pleasure to hear the sound of an orchestra that never covers the voice." The opera premiered at the Opéra Comique in 1904. Halphen died in action in World War I. A Mar. 27, 1920 letter to his widow thanks her for her donation for war orphans and adds, "On April Lazare Levy and I will perform your dear departed husband's Sonata in a concert which I am giving as a benefit for Jewish families in distress in Russia and Poland -- in other words for the VICTIMS OF THE POGROMS…." An undated letter tells Mme. Halphen that he "will be in rehearsals at the time of the religious holidays. In my thoughts I will be present with all the fervor I have for everything relating to the memory of the dear departed one…". Estimated Value $450 - 650

Gershwin, Ira (1896-1983) American lyricist who teamed with his brother George to become one of the major influences in American musical theater. Four light blue checks, two made out to Ira Gershwin and two to George Gershwin, but all endorsed in Ira's hand, all from music publisher HARMS Incorporated, New York, and dated between Mar. 14-Sept. 19, 1924. Ira endorsed one check "George Gershwin," one "I. Gershwin," one as "George Gershwin" and "I.B. Gershwin," and one as "G. Gershwin" and "I.B. Gershwin." Light soiling; perforation cancellations do not affect endorsements; one stamped endorsement affects one endorsement. Estimated Value $400 - 600

Guilbert, Yvette (1865-1944) Chanteuse depicted by Chéret and Toulouse-Lautrec and admired by Freud. She attempted to help Jewish artists during the Vichy regime; her avowed goal was to "wage a war of love against anti-Semitism." Autograph letter signed, 1½ pp, in French, 5½ x 7¼ in., Lenk, Switzerland, Aug. 30, n.y. With holograph envelope, lacking upper right corner. To journalist and broadcaster Emily Nathan: "Have you thought constructively about our conversation? If you are still prepared to help with my idea of a crusade for your poor fellow Jews, do me the favor of letting me know what price the Radio charges for five and for 10 minutes of conversation on the station. Can you also give me the addresses of a few rich Jews who would pay the Radio station to come to the aid of their own, by making appeals to the Aryans…." Very good; uneven toning; small area of text missing, affecting a couple of words but not the signature. Estimated Value $200 - 300

Inscribed, signed photo in costume as Leonore in Beethoven's "Fidelio," pictured with Richard Strauss who conducted her in the role at the 1932 Salzburg Festival, 3½ x 5 in. Inscribed to Heinrich Sichrovsky, member of a prominent Viennese Jewish family. Inscription and portion of signature are penned against dark background. Estimated Value $150 - 250

[Songwriters/Composers] Sidney Romberg, Irving Caesar, Harry Ruby, and Seven Other. Collection of ten checks from two music publishing houses, Witmark & Sons, Inc. and HARMS Incorporated, dated from March 1924 to May 1930. The checks are made out to and endorsed by the following: Sigmund Romberg, composer of the music for the operetta The Student Prince; Bud De Sylva, songwriter, film producer, and co-founder of Capitol Records; Lew Pollock, song composer; Vincent Youmans, theater composer ("No, No, Nanette") and Broadway producer; Robert Russell Bennett, composer and arranger of Broadway and Hollywood musicals; Ralph Rainger, composer of music for films ("Thanks for the Memory"); Irving Caesar, lyricist and theater composer ("Tea For Two," "Just A Gigolo"); Bert Kalmar, lyricist who collaborated with Harry Ruby to write the musical scores for "Animal Crackers," "Duck Soup," and more; Harry Ruby, collaborated with Bert Kalmar; and Harry Woods, Tin Pan Alley songwriter ("When the Red Red Robin") and pianist. Also noteworthy, one of the checks is signed by Louis Dreyfus, who was one of the founders of ASCAP. There is a lot of music history in this lot! Estimated Value $500 - 750

Stravinsky, Igor (1882-1971) Russian born composer, pianist, and conductor; considered one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Score of Stravinsky's "Rag-Time" signed on the first page of the score. This tri-lingual (German, English, French) "miniature" score is No. 291, and was published by the Wiener Philharmonischer Verlag A.G., Wien, 1924, 32 pp. Stravinsky's name is spelled in German, "Strawinsky". A dampstain in lower portion of title page and frontispiece is primarily in blank area; a 1¼ in. separation of front cover from spine.

Stravinsky signed this personally for the consignor at a dinner party in downtown Los Angeles during the 1950s. She remembers that there were only about six people at the dinner party and that Man Ray was one of the guests. Estimated Value $750 - 1,000

[Two Jewish Sopranos] Grete Forst and Rose Pauly. Grete Forst (1878-1942) One of Gustave Mahler's roster of great singers at the Vienna Opera. She converted to Catholicism in 1940 but was arrested in 1942 and sent to a concentration camp, where she died. Puccini much admired her Madame Butterfly. Attractive gilt-edged cabinet photo signed and inscribed, "As a friendly souvenir of Grete Forst / Vienna June 1906." Rose Pauly (1894-1975) Richard Strauss' favorite Elektra, a role she sang in many opera houses, including San Francisco and the Met. Nazi persecution ended her career in Europe. She emigrated to Palestine in 1946 and taught singing until her death. Two autograph notes signed on picture postcards, both addressed to actress Katherine Cornell, one from Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary), July 4, 1938, and the other Aug. 26, 1941, "from this wonderful country Mexico, where I am singing….I am in N.Y. beginning of Sept…."
