Great Britain. Sovereign, 1837. S.3829B; Fr-383; KM-717. William IV. Sovereign Obverse, bare headed portrait of King right by W. Wyon. Reverse, crowned shield and mantle. Date below. Sharply struck mint state with unusually nice surfaces and glowing luster. A very tough date in this state of preservation, Dr Terner was not able to obtain an 1837 Sovereign in this grade! NGC graded MS-64. WINGS Approved.
* 1837 was the last year of William IV's coinage. His reign had only lasted some 7 years and he died relatively unexpectedly in June 1837. He had been 'very much shaken and affected' by the death of his eldest daughter, Sophia, in childbirth, in April 1837. When he died his wife Queen Adelaide attended to her husband and never went to bed herself for 10 days. William died on 20th June 1837 in Windsor Castle, where he was buried, and as he had no living legitimate issue the crown passed to a young Princess, who became Queen Victoria. It is interesting to note that William IV had many notable descendants through his illegitimate family with a Mrs Jordan, including the current UK Prime Minister David Cameron!
