Lot 159
1796 S-82 R5 Liberty Cap F15. Ten points sharper but there are microscopic specks of greenish verdigris in protected areas, mostly on the reverse. Looks nice to the unaided eye, and the crud is not distracting. The only marks are some extremely faint scratches under the patina at BERTY and UNIT. Slightly glossy chocolate and olive brown. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. The date is bold and the legends are strong except for UNITED, which was softly struck. A decent example of a variety that's difficult to find in high grade, this piece near the lower end of the condition census. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

1796 S-116 R5- Draped Bust G4. The obverse is slightly better while the reverse is a bit weaker (which is typical for Draped Bust 1796 cents), the G4 grade an average of the two. Glossy steel brown and chocolate. No roughness or verdigris, only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. 1797 S-122 R5+ VG10. Sharpness EF40 but there are significant contact marks on both sides. The strongest marks are in the field behind the curls and hair ribbon and along the rim over UNITED ST, but there are a few more scattered elsewhere on both sides. The planchet is smooth, unaffected by any traces of corrosion or verdigris. The toning is an attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate mixed with a few small swipes of darker olive brown on the reverse. Great detail, clearly the sharpest example known of the die variety, but the contact marks are a serious distraction. EDS, Breen state I, prior to any die cracks. Estimated Value $1,500-UP

Otherwise this cent is quite nice and the color is an attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel. Hints of very faded mint color are peeking through in a few of the protected areas at the top of the obverse. Late die state, Breen V late, with an unlisted cud break in the dentils over NIT in UNITED. 1798 S-167 R1 Large 8 with Style II Hair AG3. Double Struck. A few points sharper but porous under rather glossy toning that is dark olive brown in the fields and lighter steel brown on the devices. Nothing special except that it was boldly double struck. The first strike was normal and centered on the planchet. The second strike was positioned about 70% off center to K-11 leaving the bust tip and 98 from the date clearly visible at the back of Ms Liberty's head. The off-center strike on the reverse shows several leaves from the wreath and obliterated UNI from the first strike. The date is faint on the first strike. Obviously low grade but a neat mint error.
