1909-S Lincoln Cent. VDB. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Well struck with nice full red color. A popular key date. A fully red coin and very nice for the given grade. Without hesitation we can say that the 1909-S V.D.B. Lincoln cent is the greatest of the "popular rarities" in the 20th-century series. From almost the first day it was released to the point when collecting by date and mint become popular in the 1930s, the 1909-S V.D.B. was the central focus for collectors who hoped to find one in circulation. A few did, but the search was fun. Quite a large number of Mint State pieces exist, having been saved as a novelty during this first year of issue. However, during the intervening years, over a century now, the majority have fallen to one or another consequences, such as cleaning, handling, spotting, or whatever. We are reminded of one of Doctor Who's lines in the popular British television series: Entropy increases. Meaning that time and the elements eventually take a toll. Among the gems that remain, relatively few equal the stature of this lovely MS65 Red piece -- relatively few, that is, in comparison to the many thousands of potential buyers (PCGS # 2428) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 2528
1909-S Lincoln Cent. VDB. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Lots of mint red still visible. We have handled a fair number of '09-S VDB Lincoln cents, and this one comes as close to the ideal for its MS64 R&B grade as any. Both sides are richly frosted with alternating golden, orange, and copper-red luster. The strike is complete including full wheat kernels and lines representing the chaff; meanwhile, the surface being spot-free and devoid of obvious marks, is smooth with a satin-like luster. In light of that, we can say to every prospective buyer, give it a strong bid since there will likely be numerous other individuals hoping to acquire it (PCGS # 2427) .
Estimated Value $2,100 - 2,200.

1909-S Lincoln Cent. VDB. NGC graded EF-45 Brown. Always in great demand as the Key Date to the Lincoln cent series. Only 484,000 minted. Coinage for this year and mint might have been larger were it not for the issuance of three Types in a single year, Indian, Lincoln with VDB, and Lincoln without VDB. 1911-S Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Well struck with even Mint Red. Many of the early Lincoln Cents are quite difficult to find in Gem, full red condition, with the 1911-S being no exemption from this rule of thumb. A lower mintage issue, 4,026,000 pieces, were struck at San Francisco this year. The strike is top notch on this high quality semi-key both boldly impressed and splendid in its coppery red sheath that equally gleams from each side. Pop 58; 13 finer, 2 in 65+RD, 11 in 66RD (PCGS # 2449) .

1914 Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded Proof 66 Brown. Well struck with lovely shades of brown colors. Only 1,365 minted. An impressive gem Matte Proof Lincoln cent, a coin at once possessed of both great physical quality and impressive visual merit. Mainly brown with blue iridescence on the obverse and reverse plus a touch of violet for color it seems Nature went out of its way to create this marvel for coin collectors! A lovely coin that has a small gathering of peers, but one that has rarely been bettered in the PCGS Population Report by any other example of the date within any color designation. There you have it, if you desire a gorgeous Proof 1914 Lincoln cent available in a PCGS holder, you must decide to bid now or wait patiently for the appearance of one of this coin's compatriots. And who knows when that will be. Pop 16; 3 finer, 2 in 66+, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 3318) .

1914-S Lincoln Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. CAC Approved PQ. Boldly struck with lots of red. Scarce in higher grades of Red. Careful study is recommended when viewing this coin for potential upgrade. The 1914-S fails in rarity compared to its similarly dated D-mint counterpart from an absolute standpoint, but it is still an elusive issue in full mint red color near-Gem condition, a coin that is particularly elusive in the finer Mint State grades as well. Pop 130; 36 finer, 1 in 64+, 32 in 65, 3 in 66 (PCGS # 2476) .

1922. No D. Strong Reverse. PCGS graded EF-45 Brown. CAC Approved. Very sharp definition on the wheat ears and legends on the reverse (grading on this unusual coin is always from the reverse, since the obverse was from a very worn die producing a soft appearance on that side).

A total of 7.1 million pieces were produced (low for a 20th century Cent). The overall workmanship was poor. Two No D varieties (Die Pairs One and Three) were created when grease or other contaminants filled the mintmark cavity on the obverse die. Coins of these varieties are generally valued lower than examples of Die Pair Two (this coin), which were produced when the D mintmark was removed by excessive die polishing. As a result of this polishing, the entire obverse impression is softly detailed on all examples of this die marriage. The reverse is much sharper, however, because a new anvil die was inserted into the press before the repolished obverse die was cleared for further production (PCGS # 3285) .
Estimated Value $2,300 - 2,400.
