1849 N-21 R4 EF40. Glossy chocolate and olive brown. Close to EF45 but there are a few too many light nicks for the higher grade. A very light rim bruise left of star 4 and a tiny one over star 7 are the only notable marks. Sharply struck EDS. The myriad die lines in the field around ONE CENT are crisp.

1849 N-24 R3- VF35. Glossy light to medium brown with a few small splashes of reddish brown toning on the reverse. A dull rim nick at star 9 is the only notable sign of contact. LDS, die state c, with a clearly defined rim cud break at star 13 reaching part way up to star 12. An extremely rare intermediate state of this cud break. CC#3 of the few known in this die state.

1849 N-27 R4 AU50. Doubled Die Reverse. Frosty chocolate brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the 184 thanks to a rub in that area. No spots or stains, only a few tiny nicks, none notable. MDS, die state b. The spike down from the dentils at star 9 is visible and die rust is visible around much of the legend outside the wreath. The doubling on the reverse is clear, strongest at STATES. A variety that is difficult to find nice, only two known in mint state.

There is a speck of carbon in the dentils under the 5, a small pinprick in the field over star 3, and a couple tiny ticks on the rim at star 10. MDS die state b. The diagonal die lines at the date are gone and the ones at the N in UNITED are dull. The repunching at the base of the first 1 is clear. Tied for CC#4 with one other example that has less mint color.

1853 N-18 R1 PCGS graded MS64+ Brown, CAC approved. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with overtones of light bluish steel. About 5-10% of the original mint red remains on both sides. Would rate a higher grade but there are a few spots of darker toning at the 18 and bottom of the neck, and a couple of these spots show fine carbon. The reverse is choice. MDS, die state b. The dash under the 8 is clear but the die lines in the obverse fields are gone. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and Carvin Goodridge provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only example graded at PCGS.

1853 N-24 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty light bluish steel brown with faded mint red covering nearly a third of both sides. The only marks are a small but obvious carbon spot at the dentil tips over star 5 and a dull nick just right of the spot. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The vertical die lines at the inner curl are crisp. Our grade is MS60. The attribution and Carvin Goodridge provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 in 66BN.

1853 N-25 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty mint red faded to steel brown with about 20% of the red remaining. The only marks are a couple small spots at star 8 and a thin planchet void through OF ending in the dentils above the adjacent A (as struck). MDS, die state b. The repunching under the 1 in the date remains clear but the earlier die lines on the reverse are gone. Our grade is MS63.
