Great Britain. Joseph Moore's Pattern Penny, 1860. Peck-2129; Freeman-856. Bronzed copper. Victoria. Obverse: Laureate head of Queen to left, date 1860 below. Reverse: Figure of Britannia seated without legend or inner beaded circle. A pleasing toned example with a mid-caramel color. Many of these Moore patterns are scuffed or damaged, but this is an unusually high grade survivor. NGC graded Proof 63 Brown.

* This fascinating pattern was designed and produced in small number and in a few metals by Joseph Moore in Birmingham. The patterns were not accepted by the Mint in London for currency use, but Moore's obverse design was later utilized for a New Zealand token for the Auckland Licensed Victuallers Association. The same design was used on the very valuable and rare New Zealand Penny token/pattern dated 1879.
Estimated Value $700 - 800.
