Lot 4285
China. Dollar, ND (1916). L&M-942; Kann-663; KM-Y332; Hsu-16. Yuan Shih-kai as Emperor Hung Hsien. Proclaiming himself Emperor on Dec. 12, 1915 with the reign title of Hung Hsien, Yuan's imperial dreams were fated to last only 83 days, ending on March 22, 1916 in the face of considerable domestic and international opposition. Thus demoted, he immediately resumed the Presidency, dying in office only a few months later on June 6. This handsomely designed and perenially popular Flying Dragon silver dollar is paramount among the few mementoes of Yuan Shi-Kai's grand ambition. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, fully lustrous with an excellent strike and just a hint of light tone. The portrait is bold and expressive, and on the reverse every scale of the dragon's body exhibits knifelike sharpness; without doubt a premium example. NGC graded MS-64.
