Lot 4187
South Africa. Pond, 1874. KM1.2, Hern-B1, Fr-1, Fine Beard, reeded edge, toothed border both sides with high rims, bold detailed portrait, sharp central reverse, oval shield of arms divided in three surmounted by eagle, three "vierkleur" flags either side, full three flag poles visible each side, a light line across center of reverse. Mintage of this variety was only 695 pieces, and the dies for this extremely rare issue were engraved by Leonard C Wyon and the resulting coins struck in Birmingham, England with the small amount of gold given to the mint by Thomas François Burgers that was mined in the Lydenburg district. This was the first source of gold mined in South Africa and a rare piece of numismatic history. Of the few surviving specimens, most were drilled or mounted for jewelry which makes this coin much better and more appalling than most of the remaining survivors. Very Rare. PCGS graded Extremely Fine, Details (Scratch) Genuine.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
