Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Gold Aureus (7.02 g). Rome, A.D. 210. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Septimius Severus right. Reverse: Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm. RIC -; Calicó -; BMC -, but see pl. 54, 13 (same rev. die); Cohen -. Apparently an unpublished mule, pairing dies from two separate issues. Heavy obverse scratches, scrape on reverse, ex jewelry. Sharpness of Fine.
The obverse and reverse dies used to strike this coin come from consecutive issues but are improperly paired. The obverse legend, SEVERVS PIVS AVG, is found on coins struck from A.D. 201-210, while the reverse legend has hitherto only been found associated with the obverse legend SEVERVS PIVS AVG BRIT, struck 210-211. Improper die pairings (known as mules) are not uncommon, but they are found less often with precious metal coinage than they are with base metal issues. This is perhaps due to the simple fact that areas of the mint involved in precious metal coin production were more vigorously controlled than other areas of the mint. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
