"Who says of Cyrus, he is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please, he will say to Jerussalem, let it be rebuilt and of the temple, let its foundation be laid" Isaiah 44:28

In 538 BC, King Cyrus issued an edict that allowed the Jews to return to Judea and rebuild their temple in Jerusalem. In addition, Cyrus ordered all the holy objects taken from the temple by Nebuchadnezzar to be returned. This is mentioned twice in the book of Ezra.

The earliest coin mentioned in the Old Testament (numerous times) is the gold daric of the Great Kings of Persia. These gold coins circulated throughout the Persian Empire and the Jews were undoubtedly quite familiar with them during the Babylonian Occupation as well as their return to Palestine during the Second Temple Period.

Phoenicia, Sidon. King Tennes, 354-348 B.C. Silver Double Shekel (25.76g) Regnal Year 3. War galley traveling left; beneath, four lines of waves. Reverse: Bearded deity (or King of Persia) in horsedrawn cart driven slowly left by charioteer; cart followed by King of Sidon wearing crown and carrying animal-headed sceptre. SGC 5941; cf. Betlyon (ANSMN 21) #31. Well struck and well centered. Choice Very Fine.

A Biblical Reference Coin. In Genesis 10:19 Sidon is referred to as the border of Canaan, and in Joshua 11:8 it is described as Greater Sidon. In I Kings 16:31 the reference of Ahab is made. As king of Israel, he married Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal and became king of the Sidonians. It was Ahab who …"did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him." Then in II Kings 9:33 reference is made of Jezebel and her blood thirsty campaign to wipe out Israel's religion and replace it with the Canaanite's.

Demetrius II made a peace treaty with the Jews when he gained the Syrian throne. (1 Maccabbes 11:32-37). This was soon broken and it was under Simon Maccabeus that the Jews achieved their independence. (1 Maccabees 13:35-42).

Reverse: Jupiter drives quadriga left and hurls thunderbolt; scorpion below horses. Hendin 1441; Craw. 422/1b; Sear 378. Attractive iridescent tone. Extremely Fine.

This commemorates the defeat of King Aretas by Pompey's general Marcus Scaurus. Aretas supported John Hyrcanus II in his battles against his brother, Aristobulus II. In 58 BCE, Aretas was required to surrender and pay a fee of 300 talent to Pompey. Pub. Plautius was curule aedile with M. Ameilius at this time; therefore, this coin is among the earliest references of a Roman moneyer to commemorate an event from his own history.

The kneeling figure is most likely Aristobulus, the Jewish high priest, then held captive by Pompey in Rome.

The abbreviation in the obverse legend of "Shim" has been proposed as a dual meaning as the first three letters of Bar Kochba's first name Simon as well as the first word of the prayer, the Shema, which is believed to be the rallying cry of Simon Bar Kochba.
