Lot 2895
1877-S Trade Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC Approved. Well struck and nicely toned. A Premium Quality coin for the grade. The present specimen displays smooth, frosted surfaces that would settle for nothing less than a full MS63 grade assigned. Although considered to be a plentiful issue, the 1877-S also represents the perfect Type Coin candidate for someone wishing to purchase a single example to define this period in US history where a large silver Trade Coin was thought advisable for use in competition with other trade coins of the world. The strike on this handsome coin is much more than adequate, it is superior to most. There are no bothersome abrasions or points of wear, either (PCGS # 7046) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

Lot 2896
1877-S Trade Dollar. NGC graded MS-63. Lightly toned, a lustrous, well struck example of this historic coin meant for use in overseas trade, primarily in Asia. In an attempt to obtain the best possible design for the new Trade Dollar, Mint Director Linderman used a provision of the recently passed Coinage Act of 1873 to hire outside artists. There were several patterns made for the 1873 trade dollar, but in the end Linderman chose one by Chief Engraver William Barber. The adopted design had the familiar figure of a seated Liberty, but in a somewhat different pose from the regular coinage. There was a great deal of ceremony connected with the first trade dollar coinage, and mintage was heavy for quite some time. Most of the 1873 coinage did go to the Orient, as intended in the legislation, but by 1874 the ever-declining world price of silver made it advantageous to dump many of the trade dollars on the American domestic market for whatever they would bring.By 1876 the dumping of trade dollars had become so prevalent that the government withdrew the legal-tender status of the coin. The market value then fell to about 80 cents, varying with the price of silver on the open market. The fall of silver made the owners of bullion even more desperate to get rid of their excess metal, and large numbers of trade dollars were made in 1876 and 1877 despite growing antagonism toward them by the public. There were always, however, unscrupulous individuals willing to put them in circulation at the expense of someone else.
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,700.

Lot 2897
1877-S Trade Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. A lovely frosty coin that deserves a MS64 grade. The most plentiful issue is this 1877-S, meaning that a choice coin with this ones elevated eye-appeal would make a perfect addition to ones Type Set or selection of 19th century representative US coins. Trade dollars were supposed to be used for export to Asia, but many actually circulated here. Due to their lack of legal tender status as a Trade coin, this caused marked confusion among the public. The denomination was withdrawn beginning in the late 1880s (PCGS # 7046) .
Estimated Value $1,600 - 1,700.

1880 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Proof only year with 1,987 minted. Well struck and fully white. A vibrant, thoroughly dazzling mirrors complement immaculate motifs and exquisitely clear top quality. This may, indeed, be the perfect role model for a Proof Trade Dollar. It certainly lays claim to beauty uncompromised by the vicissitudes of time. In short, a joy to behold. View this coin under low magnification lingering for a while on the finest of details, bearing in mind that they were done at the hand of an expert mint engraver William Barber, father of the following chief engraver at the US Mint in Philadelphia, Charles E. Barber (of Barber coinage fame). A splendid gem in all regards, and among the finest Proof 66s of the date certified by a major grading firm. To connoisseurs of quality, Trade Dollar specialists, and advanced type set collectors alike we say the present Gem Cameo readily and easily ranks among the more attractive examples know. Pop 32; 22 finer .

Lot 2900
1881 Trade Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A brilliant, basically untoned gem with excellent cameo contrast. Popular Proof only date. A visually arresting, indeed a "classy" coin with bright reflective surfaces on the obverse and reverse, emboldened by the cameo contrasting devices. Deeply mirrored with lustrous mirror-like accents. Some dates in the Proof-only period that spanned 1878 to 1883 are weakly struck on the stars and head. Walter Breen suggested that a flat head and flat stars are the norm for this issue, however, the present example is truly an exception. All details are sharp.

Apparently the short lived boom for Proof trade dollars that occurred in 1879 and 1880 was over, as the mintage of this 1881 dropped to 960 coins, similar to several other Proof issues earlier in this series. Pop 19; 32 finer .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.
