Lot 2731
1875-CC Twenty Cents. PCGS graded EF-40. CAC Approved. Lightly toned and problem free. In its short existence, two CC Mint Twenty-cents were minted, the available (and affordable) '75-CC and the "If I were a King" '76-CC. This is the former, and an attractive EF40 at that, a reminder of the strange twists and turns policy makes in Washington, D.C. when it comes to our monetary unit known as the dollar. Designs were by William Barber. Barber followed closely his forebear in the job, Christian Gobrecht who first conceived of a seated figure of Liberty holding a pileus (liberty cap) on a pole while supporting a shield emblazoned with LIBERTY in order to double-down on the allegorical reference of a free people. It's likeness to the then-circulating silver Quarter Dollar, unfortunately, caused immediate confusion in the minds of the public. Congress heard, and directed the Mint to cease minting the Twenty-cent denomination. The series lasted from 1875 to 1878 inclusive (PCGS # 5297) .
Estimated Value $800 - 900.

Lot 2732
1876 Twenty Cents. NGC graded Proof 64. Nice blue obverse toning. Only 1,260 minted. By far the most visually fascinating feature of this coin is its beautiful color. That along with full swirling mirror-Proof luster on both sides, in fact. Even this Proof 64 condition of the luster isn't enough. The supporting strike is just as strong, just as bold, with clear definition to the high points. Pop 74; 36 finer.
Estimated Value $3,400 - 3,600.
