Lot 51
(1775) Imitation British Halfpenny Obverse Brockage VG10. Choice glossy chocolate and dark steel brown. Smooth and very nice for the grade, just worn. This is a full obverse brockage strike with no offset or shift between the normal and incuse (brockage) impressions. This piece was struck between the obverse die and the obverse of a previously struck piece that remained in position on the press. And we can determine the date because the strong die break at the throat of George III is found on pieces dated 1775. Listed on pages 65-6 of the "Redbook." Weight 84.2 grains.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

The planchet is free of flaws but there is a minor clip at the shoulder not affecting any of the devices. Rather glossy light olive and chocolate brown. The date is complete and easily readable. 1786 Connecticut Miller 5.7-H.1 Rarity-6- PCGS Genuine, AU Details, Cleaning. Frosty medium brown with wisps of imbedded dark planchet slag on the upper part of the reverse, as struck. Probably recolored, but the toning is quite attractive. The surfaces are decent, especially for a 1786 Connecticut, but there is extremely fine granularity covering all but the highpoints. There is very little if any actual wear. Nicely centered on the planchet giving us a clear look at the rim cud break above CO in CONNEC. The date is weak but readable, the legends are clear, and the strong break across the neck is bold. Comparable to the Ford example, superior to the Perkins piece. Worth a look from Connecticut specialists. Listed on page 61 in the "Redbook."

No contact marks, but there is a small spot of very fine corrosion at the foot of the I in AUCTORI. The centers are softly struck, as usual on this variety, but everything else is strongly impressed. The date and legends are complete and bold. LDS with obvious swelling behind the head and sinking in the center of the reverse (which is responsible for the weakness in that area). The planchet is free of voids or clips, which is unusual. A very nice example of the popular Small Head type. Listed on page 61 in the "Redbook." Weight 114.3 grains.

1787 Connecticut Draped Bust Left Miller 24-FF Rarity-7- F15. Sharpness near VF30 but there are three fine pin scratches on the obverse extending from rim to rim and intersecting in the center. The scratches are old and blend into the natural toning, but they are hard to miss. The only other mark is a small chip out of the rim under the bust. Rather glossy olive brown with light steel brown toning covering the devices, the two-tone effect accenting the designs and adding to the eye appeal, which is decent in spite of the scratches. The devices are smooth but the fields show extremely fine granularity under the toning. The right edge on both sides is softly struck, as usual on this variety. The date is bold and the legends are strong except for NEC and ET LIB, which are missing in the weakly impressed area. This piece has better detail than the Perkins example, which was called "probably finest known" in the catalog. And the variety was missing in the Taylor, Oechsner, Norweb, and Ford collections. In addition, this piece came from the famous collection of Dr. Thomas Hall, who wrote the attribution on the edge in white ink. The type is listed on page 62 in the "Redbook." Weight 153.3 grains.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
