Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1
1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree Shilling Noe-14 Rarity-4 VF25. Choice glossy light steel gray with darker gray toning in the protected areas. The planchet is smooth and displays only a few trivial signs of contact. A tiny scratch at the left side of the N in NEW is a good identifying mark. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the bottom leaving the tops of IN and the adjacent MA off the planchet, but everything else is complete and easily readable. The reverse is perfectly centered with complete legends. The date and XII denomination are bold. A very nice, well-balanced example of the "Spiny Tree" type. Listed on pages 38-39 in the 2013 edition of the "Redbook." Weight 68.7 grains.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Lot 2
1652 Massachusetts Oak Tree 6 Pence Noe-16 Rarity-5 VF30. Type with IN on the Reverse. Frosty light silvery steel and medium gray. The planchet is a bit uneven and there is an obvious void at the N in NEW on the reverse, but the Oak Tree is complete and clear. Struck slightly off center to K-7 leaving much of the legend off the planchet, but the date and denomination are bold. Overall quite nice for this scarce denomination. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight 33.6 grains.

Lot 3
1662 Massachusetts Oak Tree 2 Pence Noe-33 Rarity-7 PCGS graded VF30. Very attractive glossy steel gray with lighter silvery gray toning on the devices. Nicely centered on a defect-free planchet with clear legends and all the border beads showing around both sides. The only mark is a dull dent under the right foot of the first N in ENGLAND, and this dent caused a slight bulge under the second S in MASATHVSETS. A premium example of this very rare variety with the "Large 2" in the date. Slightly finer than the single example in the John Ford sale. Listed on page 38 in the "Redbook." Weight shown as 10.8 grains on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-1 Rarity-2 AU50. Type with Pellets at the Trunk. Choice glossy medium gray and steel, the devices slightly lighter than the fields and protected areas. Sharply detailed and essentially flawless except for three small dents around the first T in MASATHVSETS. The Pine Tree, date, and denomination are all bold and the legends are complete except for the upper edge of IN on the obverse and the opposing EN in ENGLAND, which are tight to the edge of the planchet. A superior example of the Large Planchet type. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight 70.5 grains.

Lot 5
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-16 Rarity-2 PCGS Genuine, VF Details, Damage or Tooling. Small Planchet type. Frosty medium gray with lighter steel toning covering the devices. Nicely centered on the planchet, but the opposing tops on both sides were weakly struck, and those areas show several old, light scratches. Additional scratches are visible under magnification, but they are not distracting. The Pine Tree, date, and denomination are all clear. The legends are complete except for those few letters affected by the weak strike at the top of both sides. Our grade is VF25 net F15+. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight listed on the PCGS label as 60.80 grains.

Lot 6
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree 6 Pence Noe-33 Rarity-3 Fine-15. Slightly sharper but cleaned with microscopic granularity covering the protected areas on both sides. In addition there is some light tooling under the M left of the base of the Pine Tree and similar tooling to strengthen the devices at the base of the second N in ENGLAND. Perhaps this piece was holed and repaired since these tooled areas are exactly opposite one another, but this possibility was not recognized in the lot description provided in the previous auction appearance. The only other notable mark is a depression at the left foot of the I in VI. The date and VI denomination are bold and most of the legend is easily readable. The obverse (tree side) was struck a bit off center to K-11 (as always with this variety) while the reverse is off center only slightly to K-6. Frosty light bluish steel and silvery gray. A decent if imperfect example of the "Pellets at Trunk" type. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight 31.4 grains.
Estimated Value $750-UP.

Lot 7
1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree 3 Pence Noe-34 Rarity-4 VF30. Many of the details are sharper than the assigned grade but the wear is uneven due to a wavy planchet. Fortunately the Pine Tree and the III denomination are bold, and most of the legends are easily readable even though it was struck slightly off center to K-12. The top of the 5 in the date is flattened by wear but the remainder of the date is strong. Glossy medium gray with lighter silvery gray toning on the devices. A very acceptable example of the "Pellets at Trunk" type of this tough denomination. Listed on page 39 in the 2013 edition of the "Redbook." Weight 17.4 grains.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

(1667-69) Saint Patrick's Halfpenny Breen-204 Vlack 4-E VG10. The "Small Letters Both Sides" type. Rather glossy light to medium chocolate brown blending to dark chocolate in the protected areas. The brass "splasher" at the crown is a lighter shade of golden tan. Mostly smooth with decent surfaces, essentially just worn. A dull, very old scratch through the top of the harp to the rim left of the crown is the only notable mark. A quite acceptable example of the halfpenny denomination of the St Patrick or Mark Newby type, much rarer than the farthing denomination. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight 146.6 grains.

(1667-69) Saint Patrick's Farthing Breen-212 Griffee G35-5/5a Rarity-7+ PCGS graded VF30. Type with "Sea Beasts below King" according to Breen. Choice glossy medium brown. The surfaces are exceptional for a St Patrick farthing, free of any hint of roughness and no contact marks. The brass splasher on the crown is obvious. An interesting feature of this variety is obvious repunching of the E in REX which causes it to read "RIEX." This feature was not visible on the Griffee specimen due to weakness in that area, but it is clear on this piece. Four were known to Griffee, and this one is clearly better than the Griffee specimen. Comes with a certification signed by Walter Breen. Listed on page 41 in the Redbook."

Well centered on a smooth, problem-free planchet. Choice for the grade, especially for a St Patrick farthing. The brass splasher is located at the bottom of the harp instead of on the crown as intended. A rare type of error for these small coppers. (1667-69) Saint Patrick's Farthing Breen-218 Griffee G81-2/2c Rarity-8 F15. Variety with what Breen calls a "Martlet below King." Slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker golden olive toning on the "splasher" that covers the crown. The surfaces are decent but do display uniform extremely fine granularity on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. Nicely centered on a planchet with a diameter of 25mm, which is quite large for this denomination. The strike is a bit uneven with some elements stronger and others weaker, but the tiny "Martlet" under the king is strong. John Griffee, who was a dedicated student of this series, knew of only a single example of this die variety. This piece brings that count to at least 2 since it is not his discovery coin. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight 83.6 grains.

Lot 13
(1688) American Plantation Token Breen-78 Newman 4-E MS60. Frosty light to medium gray with darker gray toning on the highpoints and delicate overtones of light bluish steel in the protected areas. Clearly never circulated, but there are a few of the usual spots of "tin pest" on both sides, mostly near the rims. There is no way to determine with certainty whether this piece is an original or a restrike as both were struck using the same dies. The originals were struck in 1688 near the end of the reign of England's James II, before the "Glorious Revolution" resulted in his "removal from office." The dies were obtained much later by a London coin dealer by the name of Matthew Young, and he struck an undetermined quantity of examples circa 1828. Since the pieces struck from the Newman 4-E die pair never show the die crack present on the restrikes of the Newman 5-D die pair, you can never be certain of the version you have. However, it is safe to assume an example in this high state of preservation is one of those restrikes. Listed on page 41 in the "Redbook." Weight 151.4 grains.

Lot 49
1787 Nova Eborac with Figure Seated Right Breen-987 VF30. Ten points sharper but covered with very fine roughness that does not detract from the excellent eye appeal offered by this piece. No verdigris, and the only marks are a very dull scratch in the field off the chin and a thin nick right of the T in VERT. LDS with a cud break at the edge before the legs of the seated figure. The obverse is misaligned slightly to K-2 while the reverse is centered on the planchet. The date is complete and strong and the legends are bold except for the top of EBORAC, which is off the planchet due to the die misalignment. Listed on page 68 in the "Redbook." Weight 111.2 grains.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1772 Imitation British Halfpenny Reverse Brockage VF25. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. The surfaces are smooth and there are just a few minor contact marks. A tiny planchet lamination at the waist of the seated figure on the normal (not incuse) side is the best identifying mark. This is a full reverse brockage with no offset (shift) between the normal and incuse sides. These error strikes occur when a planchet is struck between the reverse die and the reverse of a previously struck piece that remained in the coining chamber of the press. The date and legends are readable on both sides. A very nice example of this type of mint error. Listed on page 65-6 in the "Redbook." Weight 115.4 grains.
Estimated Value $100-UP.
