The younger Faustina, wife of Marcus Aurelius, died in Cappadocia in AD 175. Despite her rumored infidelities, her memory was honored by the emperor, and she was immediately deified. This interesting sestertius type belongs to her posthumous coinage, which commenced in AD 176. The scepter resting against an empty throne is symbolic of the empress's passing, and the appearance of the peacock in the foreground equates her with Juno Regina (Queen Juno), consort of Jupiter.

Julianus standing left holding a globe and roll. RIC 16a; BMCRE 28; Cohen 17. Some smoothing noted. Attractive olive-brown with reddish highlights. Bold depiction of Julianus. Very Fine. Rare.

Rome was thrown into chaos after the vile murder of Pertinax by the Praetorian guards on March 28, AD 193. Crazed by their greed and vulgar power, the Praetorians auctioned off the Purple. Bidding was locked between the city prefect, Flavius Sulpicianus, father-in-law of Pertinax, and the Milan-born plutocrat and senator Didius Julianus. Julianus won with a pledge of 25,000 Sestertii per Praetorian, and was hailed emperor by a cowering Senate. Infuriated, the Roman populace sent deputations to the frontier commanders to come and avenge Pertinax and put Rome right. Septimius Severus was the first to arrive. Seeking to save themselves, the Praetorians handed Julianus over. Pertinax was deified by the Senate, who condemned Julianus and raised Severus to emperor. On June 1 or 2, Didius Julianus was put to death like a common criminal.

Pescennius Niger, AD 193-194. Silver Denarius (2.9g) minted at Antioch, AD 194. IMP CAES C PESC NIGERIVS AVG COS II. Laureate head of Niger right. Reverse: VICTOR IVST AVG. Victoria (Victory) advancing left, holding wreath and palm frond. RIC 81f; RSC 76a. A fantastic example! Lovely golden highlights, superbly struck and of excellent metal quality for the type. Lustrous. Among the finest in existence. Nearly Mint State.

Scion of an equestrian family from Aquinum, between Rome and Pompeii, Gaius Pescennius Niger was the most legitimate candidate of the three frontier generals who answered Rome's plea to end the shameful tyranny of Didius Julianus and the praetorian guards. Alas his command was in Syria. The news did not reach Niger in time to reach Rome before Septimius Severus who easily marched from Pannonia and deposed Didius Julianus. Severus bought off the neutrality of the other general Clodius Albinus who was governor of Britain, with the empty title of Caesar, and declared Niger a public enemy. Niger consolidated his power in the East, but his nine legions were no match for the armies of Severus. After suffering a decisive defeat at Issus, Niger fled to his capital of Antioch, but was captured and executed by the Severan general Anullinus.
