1837 N-17 R4 Plain Hair Cord VF25. Sharpness EF40 and choice except for "March 24" delicately pinscratched into the field before the portrait and "1840" similarly applied to the field above the head. Obviously that date was important to someone at the time. Otherwise this piece essentially is flawless in every respect. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate. LDS with a series of rim cud breaks around the obverse and bold die cracks on the lower part of the reverse.

1838 N-6 R1. NGC graded MS-62 Brown. Lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with a couple small puffs of darker olive brown toning on the obverse and a few more on the reverse. A small area of the darker toning at the IB in LIBERTY and a tiny vertical nick above the right end of the nostril can help identify this cent. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas. LDS. The point from the leaf under the R in AMERICA is gone and a clear die clashmark arcs through the tip of the nose. Our grade is MS60.

1839/6 N-1 R3+ Overdate 9 over 6 VG10. Sharpness near VF20 but a few contact marks were carefully smoothed out of the field just off the tip of the nose and from the cheek. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and display only a few trivial contact marks. Expertly retoned glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. Excellent eye appeal for the grade, but the obverse burnishing is obvious under magnification. E-MDS. There is a dull wave in the field from between stars 3 & 4 to the nose, but the die is not cracked. The overdate feature is bold.

The only marks are a tiny tick in the field near the tip of the nose and a few tiny spots of darker toning under star 10. E-MDS, die state a. The repunching at the base of the 8 is dull but clearly visible. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#6 honors in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

1840 N-3 R1 Small Date. NGC graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with tiny peeps of faded mint color showing on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and attractive. The only marks are a small planchet chip in the field left of star 10 (as struck) and a small spot of darker olive brown toning in the field before the neck. LDS, die state c. The die crack through the date and most stars is clear and the tiny lumps seen under the date in the earlier states are gone. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state. Lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with hints of underlying very faded mint color showing through on the obverse. A small splash of slightly darker toning at star 13 contains microscopic traces of roughness but the reminder of this cent is satiny and attractive. E-MDS, die state a, prior to any die cracks. 1845 N-8 R1 MS63. Mint red fading to light olive brown and steel with a third of the mellowed mint color remaining. Great eye appeal and nearly gem if not for a faint spot of darker toning in the middle of the jawline, a light nick on the chin, and a few microscopic hairlines in the obverse fields. The reverse is flawless, a solid gem in every respect. Sharply struck VEDS (very early die state) with hard, reflective fields on both sides. Tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census without regard to the die state. A beautiful cent, and it comes with an impressive provenance.

1845 N-13 R2 VF20. Slightly sharper but there is a collection of very tiny pinpricks in the field right of the inner curl. Glossy dark chocolate brown mixed with lighter chocolate tones on the reverse. Semi-unique LDS, die state g, with a long rim cud break on the obverse from star 11.5 clockwise to star 3 and another on the reverse over ERICA to under the stem tip. The margins of the obverse rim cud and the lower margin of the reverse rim cud (below the stem tip) are clearly defined, but the upper margin of the cud over ERICA is worn smooth. Nonetheless, the lower end of the reverse cud confirms the die state. Only two examples of the die state have been confirmed, and this piece is slightly the finer of the two.

1848 N-12 R1. NGC graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Highly lustrous bluish steel and chocolate with 15% of the mint color showing on the obverse and 85% of the bright original mint red remaining on the reverse. The obverse is a gem, virtually flawless. The reverse would rate a similar grade but there are numerous small specks of dark toning scattered about, mostly inside the wreath. None of these specks is significant in its own right, but there are too many to ignore. Still a very impressive cent. M-LDS, die state b late. The die lines over ERIC seen in the earlier states are very weak, nearly gone. Our grade is MS63+. Tied for CC#4 honors in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.

Several hairline scratches are hidden in the patina in the obverse fields. Rather glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter brown toning covering the highpoints. Very rare LDS, die state d, with strong rim cud breaks from under the end of the wreath ribbon up to UN in UNITED. Only 9 examples are known with these rim cuds, and the cuds are considerably less prominent on many of those.
