1799/8 S-188 R4 Overdate 9 over 8 PCGS Genuine, Good Details, Environmental Damage. Sharpness near VG7 but covered with fine to moderate roughness. There are traces of shallow verdigris in protected areas and some faint hairline scratches that are effectively lost in the roughness. The date and legends are weakened by the roughness but they remain easily readable. Unfortunately evidence of the 9 over 8 overdate feature is lost in the roughness. Dark steel and olive. EDS, prior to any die cracks on the obverse. The PCGS label does not identify this as the S-188 overdate variety, only as a genuine 1799. However, it is certainly the overdate variety as the positioning of the date numerals is diagnostic.

1799 S-189 R2 AG3. Slightly glossy medium brown with dark olive toning in protected areas. The stark contrast in toning accents the designs and aids the eye appeal. Very fine roughness covers much of the planchet, particularly in the fields and protected areas, but there is no verdigris. A dull dent at the bust tip is the only obvious marks, but there are a few small rim nicks on both sides as well. The upper two-thirds of the date is strong but the lower third flows into the rim below. Most of the legends remain easily readable.
Estimated Value $800-UP.

1800/798 S-191 R3 Style I Hair with Overdate 800 over 798 VF30. Sharpness EF45 but there is a small area of fine roughness in the field before the eye. The remainder of the planchet is smooth, void of any trace of roughness or verdigris. Both sides display some small nicks, none distracting but more than you expect for a cent with so little wear. Glossy bluish steel and chocolate brown. MDS, Breen state IV. The obverse displays clear die clashmarks and the reverse is starting to fail within the wreath and at the fraction. The overdate is visible on all 3 digits (800 over 798). An imperfect but very sharp example of this popular overdate variety. Noyes photo #31980.

Nice glossy chocolate brown with lighter brown toning on the highpoints. LDS, Breen state VII, showing extensive die failures on the reverse. 1800 S-202 R4+ G4. Double Struck. Very slightly sharper but there is a large "X" with an additional crossbar lightly scratched into the center of the portrait and a strong rim dent just left of the fraction. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and attractive, choice for the grade. Terminal die state, Breen state VII. The die cracks on the obverse are massive and the reverse is very heavily swollen. This cent was double struck. The first strike was slightly off center (about a millimeter) to K-6 and the second impression was slightly off center to K-1.5 leaving a separation between the strikes of at least a millimeter. Evidence of the initial strike shows on both sides, strongest under the big die break left of the lowest curl and above ON in ONE where another ON is located. A neat mint error on a great die state.
