1797 S-124 R5+ G5. A dull rim nick left of the L in LIBERTY and a small rim bruise at the F in OF are the notable contact marks. Slightly glossy dark olive and chocolate mixed with some reddish chocolate on the obverse. Not an especially attractive cent, but it has redeeming qualities. This piece was struck at least 3 times, and a couple of those impressions were significantly off center. Evidence of the multiple strikes shows on both sides but it is clearest on the reverse. 1797 NC-3 R6- Fair-2. Sharpness VG7 but dull from microscopic roughness. No verdigris, but this cent was abused, especially on the rims where you can see dents and flattening. Small nicks and moderate dents are scattered elsewhere over the obverse, and the reverse suffers from a half dozen dull dents. Slightly glossy dark chocolate and olive mixed with some medium chocolate. EDS, Breen state I, before the die crack through TES. Not an especially attractive cent, of course, but the date is clear and the legends are nearly complete in spite of the dents. Lot 288
1798 S-165 R4 Large 8, Style II Hair VF20+. Ten points sharper but there are a couple light, old scratches on the obverse, including one from the field before the chin to the rim before the neck and another from the bottom of the neck to the rim off the bust tip. The only other contact marks of any significance is a light rim bruise at the U in UNITED. The planchet is smooth except for a bit of microscopic roughness below the portrait and in the field left of the lowest curls. Glossy chocolate brown and light olive with a hint of reddish chocolate tone in the slightly roughened area around the date and lowest curl. MDS, Breen state II, with clear die clashmarks on both sides but no die cracks. A new discovery not in the Noyes database but clearly among the finest known of this tough variety, perhaps CC# 5 or 6 in a comparison with photos of the best examples.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
