Lot 1924
1924-D. PCGS graded MS-63. Light pink toning. Scarce date. Very frosty. Very choice. Some very minor strike weakness at Liberty's knee and on the opposing side centering on the eagle's body. The 1924-D is the first of the scarce to rare mintmarked issues that continue through the end of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. The majority of Mint state survivors in today's market originated in European hoards of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Writing in 1988, Breen stated that a further 70 pieces were discovered in the summer of 1983. (Perhaps these coins were in the same Central American hoard that produced several Mint State 1909-D and 1922-S Double Eagles at around this time?) The otherwise reddish-golden color yields a very pleasing appearance. Die deterioration around the rims is often a problem for the '24-D, but the present survivor displays sharp definition in virtually all areas except those mentioned. There are no singularly noteworthy surface blemishes (PCGS # 9178) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

Lot 1928
1927. NGC graded MS-64. A frosty untoned coin, well struck and glistening. During the boom of the 1920s, production by the mint of U.S. double eagles also boomed as business and export demand expanded. Also, there was an influx of gold into the United States, which got monetized, mostly in the form of $20 gold pieces, the main reserve and trade coin of the period (PCGS # 9186) .
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,750.
