1907-D. PCGS graded MS-65+. Lovely even golden toning. A very nice example. Final year of the Liberty Head Type, and also the second year that coins were being minted at the newly established Denver, Colorado mint. A bright and gleaming gem whose cartwheel luster seems poised to detonate like a golden Fourth of July skyrocket, plus we find a touch of faint yellow-green toning, especially on the obverse. Sharply struck with full details on both sides. Definitely gem! Pop 4; 16 finer, 14 in 66, 1 in 66+, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 9053) .

Gold type collectors who desire an example of Liberty Double Eagle production in the Denver Mint typically choose an example of the 1907-D. This is the second of only two D-mint issues in this series, and it is a bit more obtainable than the first-year 1906-D. We caution bidders, however, that the '07-D becomes quite expensive in grades above MS-65.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,800.

1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim PCGS graded Genuine AU Details. Scratch. Still an attractive example of a very popular coin. "High Reliefs were struck in 3 blows of the dies on a medal press in the Philadelphia Mint," according to Stack’s, in reference to a unique plain edge 1907 High Relief $20 gold piece the firm auction in January 2006. "The first two strikings were made utilizing a plain collar, presumably to prevent the raised edge lettering from being disfigured from successive strikings. It was only during the third striking that the plain collar was replaced by the lettered collar to produce a ''complete'' High Relief Double Eagle with Lettered Edge. Due to the work-hardening of metal that results from the pressures of the striking process, the as yet ''incomplete'' coin was removed from the press after the first and second strikings to be annealed, or softened by heating." (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.

Lot 1884
1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Wire Rim PCGS graded Genuine AU Details. Surfaces tooled. In the summer of 1907, Saint Gaudens, designer of the High Relief double eagle, who had been in failing health for some time, took a turn for the worse, and in August he died. Ironically, he never lived to see examples of his own Double Eagle in production. After President Theodore Roosevelt had been appeased by the striking of 11,250 High Relief coins, a difficult task due to the high relief complexities introduced when striking, the Mint obtained permission to revise its design, wherein the relief was lowered, the Roman numerals eliminated, and more familiar numeral punches used for the date (PCGS # 9135) .
Estimated Value $5,000 - 5,500.

1907. High Relief, Roman Numerals, Flat Rim NGC graded AU Details. Some reverse marks and untoned. Removed from jewelry. Because these were given multiple blows by the dies to bring out the high relief design, even when suffering some problems, the coin is always sharply detailed. Only 11,250 minted.

Lot 1886
1907. Flat Relief, Arabic Numerals. PCGS graded MS-66. Frosty with lovely golden toning. Sun-fresh gold, indeed glowing with gold satin luster, and fully radiant with a near-perfect strike for the No Motto design (which, by its nature, has a more flattened look to it than the following, 1908-33 With Motto dates). Taking stock of another key aspect of the grade, this piece has wonderful originality throughout, including centers, rather than a bagmarked appearance as most often seen on the 1907 issue. Pop 344; 25 finer, 10 in 66+, 14 in 67, 1 in 67+ (PCGS # 9141) .

Lot 1895
1909, 9 over 8. PCGS graded MS-65. A frosty coin with lovely golden toning. It is easy to side with acknowledged experts in stressing the importance of the present lot for advanced gold specialists. The 1909/8 has long benefited for its place of honor in U.S. numismatics. It is the sole overdate in the popular and broadly collected Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. That being the case, the majority went into circulation and wore to one degree or another. Many Uncirculated survivors in today's market are rather raggedly looking with extensive bagmarks or other small blemishes. Gems are of the greatest rarity, and there are very few examples certified MS65 (see below).

This issue has a distinctive appearance for a Philadelphia double eagle struck in 1909. The obverse die came from the 1908 No Motto production, which has a distinctive look to it. The design elements on the obverse side of the coin are not as deeply impressed as those on the 1909 normal date examples. This gorgeous Gem shows ample evidence of having been given a powerful blow from the coining dies. Both sides are nice and lustrous, both show rich, frosty texture that accents the original and variegated pinkish-gold color to perfection. We would be surprised to find more than a few light bagmarks on both the obverse and the reverse, but, if we had to select an identifier, we would use the tiny mark on the fold of the lower portion of Liberty's gown where it crosses her midriff. Also, there is a small orange spot of toning at the tip of the eagle’s tail. Both can serve as provenance markers. A coin that is fully deserving of a premium bid. Pop 17; 4 finer in 66 (PCGS # 9151) .
