Henri Matisse. Blue Nude. In a wheelchair in his later years, Matisse was limited to art that could be made sitting down, e.g., drawings, paper cut-outs, and designs for larger projects. The artist hand-cut and hand-painted these cut-outs and then had his assistants, under his direction, paste them on large sheets of paper.

Produced in 1952, this work measures 13¾" x 8¾" and is entitled "Blue Nude". Double matted in beige and blue, it is housed in a 21 3/4" x 16 2/4" burl wood frame and signed "H Matisse 52" in the lower right hand corner.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.

Post, Charles Johnson. (Wounded Soldier and Three Soldiers - Unfinished Sketch). Two watercolors: One of a wounded soldier, 11¾ x 9 in., signed at lower center, matted and framed to an overall size of 19¾ x 17 in.; the second is of three soldiers going up a hill (San Juan Hill?), with unfinished background, 11 x 10½ in., signed at lower right, matted and framed to an overall size of 19 x 18½ in. Both are scenes from the Spanish American War. Accompanied by the July 7, 1958 issue of LIFE magazine which has an article on Post. p 52-61.

Charles Johnson Post was born in 1873 in New York City. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City under John Twachtman, Kenyon Cox, J. Carroll Beckwith, and Harper Pennington. Post enlisted as a private in 1898 with the 71st New York Infantry, U.S.V., which served with a regiment of the Fifth Army Corps. Post served as an illustrator for the Army and contributed a series of sketches from the Spanish American War in and around Siboney, Cuba in 1898.

Print Size: 19½ x 14 inches. Mount Size: 29 x 23 inches. From Portfolio VI, plate 7. Identified VI-7 24/110 in pencil mount recto, left lower margin. "Ansel Adams / Portfolio VI" stamp mount verso. Complete with Certificate of Authenticity #022060 from The Ansel Adams Gallery.

Late in his life, Adams felt he had been unfairly pidgeon-holed as a nature photographer, and produced Portfolio VI in response. White Post and Spandrel, an image made in the ghost town of Columbia, California is a stark example of a body of work of architectural detail.
