Chagall, Marc (1887-1995) Russian-born artist influenced by Cubism and Fauvism; known for his use of figuration and color. Typed Document Signed, one page, 10½ x 7½", 1967. In a statement titled "Circus People," Chagall tries to explain his attraction for circus people. In part: "…I have always thought of clowns, acrobats and actors as tragically human beings who, for me, are like characters in certain religious paintings. Even today, when I paint a crucifixion or some other religious scene, I experience almost the same emotions I used to feel painting circus people. And yet, there is nothing literary in these paintings, and it is very hard to explain why I find a psycho-plastic resemblance between the two kinds of work." Fine condition.
Estimated Value $300 - 500.

O'Keefe, Georgia (1887-1986) A leading American artist of the 20th century. Part of the avant-garde movement in New York, her career was promoted by photographer and art impresario Alfred Stiglitz, whom she married in 1924. From 1929, when she started visiting New Mexico, her art celebrated the American Southwest. In 1949 she moved to New Mexico. Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp, 11 x 8½ in., n.p. (New Mexico), n.d. To a local friend and neighbor in New Mexico, Richard Pritzlaff, who was one of the original importers of Egyptian Arabian horses and who raised Chinese Sharpei dogs and white peacocks.

Distressed over the disappearance of her cat while walking with her at dusk, she writes, in part: "Richard! …Half way home I noticed he wasn't with me--called--then came on home…he never came. It was a wet evening--almost raining--the ground wet….He had brought home a big squirrel the day befor [sic]--and had eaten it all but the tail--he was looking so sleek and fine….I dont mind if he goes wild and has a good life but he was so beautiful I don't like the idea that some thing ate him like he ate that fine fat squirrel. It makes me not sorry that it rains--as I know you are not apt to come over in the rain…. I would like to see you but I am just too distressed not to have the cat to show you. So--when you look out and see it raining--just know how I feel about it. …Sincerely Georgia Okeefe." Normal folds, else very fine.

Rivera, Diego (1886-1957) Considered the greatest Mexican painter of the 20th century, he reintroduced fresco painting into modern art and architecture; he was married to artist Frida Kahlo. The murals he painted in public spaces and galleries in America between 1930 and 1940 had a profound effect on American art. Autograph Drawing of a skull Inscribed and Signed, "To Ronald Diego Rivera Detroit 1933," on 6 x 4" paper. Fine condition.

Rivera went to Detroit in 1932 to execute a commission by Edsel Ford, Henry's son, to paint two murals related to the history of Detroit and the development of industry for the Detroit Institute of Arts. The work began in July 1932 and was completed by Rivera in March 1933, having expanded the work to four murals, one for each wall of the Institute's Garden Court. The murals depicted Detroit's various industries, and were controversial for several reasons, including nude figures, the depiction of workers of various races working side by side, and a vaccination scene. There was also anger at Rivera's Communist ties and that an American artist was not chosen for the work; Ford, however, stood by Rivera.
Estimated Value $400 - 600.
