Lot 2060		1810 ANACS graded AU55 Details Large Date Large 5. . BD-4. Scratched on the obverse but otherwise lustrous and well struck for this early Capped Bust issue. BD-4 with the combination of a large date and large 5 in the denomination is the most plentiful variety in the 1807-12 period. Lot 2062		1834. Crosslet 4. PCGS graded VF-30 PQ. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Rare variety. In summer 1834 the $5 denomination was redesigned by William Kneass, who created what is now known today as the Classic Head style. The new 1834 issue is similar in design to the quarter eagle of the same date. The obverse depicts the head of Miss Liberty facing left, her hair secured by a band inscribed LIBERTY, with stars circling her head, and with the date below. The reverse shows an eagle with a shield on its breast, perched on an olive branch and holding three arrows. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 5 D. surrounds. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, used earlier, was discontinued. This is a lovely example of the desirable Crosslet 4 variety, quite scarce and hard to locate in nice quality. Some residual frosty luster still evident. A few very minor abrasions and light hairlines as expected. Seldom do examples appear on the market in affordable grades similar to this (PCGS # 8172) . Lot 2067		1849-C. NGC graded AU-50. Light gold toning with luster still visible. With 64,823 pieces minted, only 600 or so are estimated to have survived. Half eagles were coined at Charlotte nearly every year from 1838 to 1861, the exception being 1845, when the mint was under repair from a catastrophic fire that had nearly destroyed it the year before. The greater utility of the half eagle and its more widespread popularity with depositors resulted in higher mintage for this denomination than for quarter eagles. The record was set in 1847, when 84,151 five-dollar pieces were coined. Mintages rarely went below 10,000 pieces, though 6,879 half eagles were struck in 1861, the final year of operation. The Charlotte Mint never produced eagles ($10 pieces) or double eagles ($20), nor did it strike the three-dollar pieces, but Charlotte did contribute to the coining of gold dollars (PCGS # 8241) . Lot 2069		1853-D. Large D. PCGS graded AU-53. Deep orange toning. Only 350 examples are estimated to have survived. Pop 34; 75 finer (PCGS # 8255) . Historic note: The Dahlonega Mint produced gold coins from a variety of gold sources: naturally-occurring gold (from Georgia, as well as other states), foreign gold coins, gold bullion, scrap gold, etc. The Dahlonega Mint even produced coins from gold that was brought in from great distances. For example, the Dahlonega Mint actually coined a great deal of California gold from 1851-1854, which was brought back by local miners returning from the California gold fields. Thus, there is no fool-proof way to know whether or not a particular Dahlonega gold coin was produced from locally mined metal. Estimated Value $2,400 - 2,500. Lot 2070		1855-C PCGS graded Genuine. Our grade is AU. Lightly toned. Only 500 examples are estimated to have survived. Smooth orange-gold surfaces seem to have escaped the usual heavy circulation marks, possibly indicating that it was recovered early and kept out of harm�s way. How romantic it would be to learn the identity of the previous collectors who owned it. Very few examples of the 1855-C exist at the AU level, and thus the present coin, while not the match some higher grade specimens such as the Garrett-Harry Bass PCGS MS63, certainly is notable in its own right (PCGS # 8262) . Lot 2075		1873. Closed 3. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely golden toning. Only 49,280 minted of which merely 750 examples are estimated to have survived. The surfaces are radiant and each side has a nice veneer of natural patina that whips and tosses as it alternates between lighter and darker shades. Often, a soft impact was left by the recoil of the likely worn dies that struck this period�s coinage (1860s-1870s); but in a few instances like the present 1873 Liberty half eagle, the opposite is the case and the coin has a convincing consistent detail throughout. Lot 2083		1881-S. NGC graded MS-65. Light gold tone.Strong metal flow augments the already showy mint luster that covers the surfaces, giving this Gem coin a brand new, glowing appearance. The mint brilliance is only broken up by an rare overlay of pale patina. A rounded impression uncommon for later Liberty fives; most are well imprinted by the stamp of the dies that struck this date; we are happy to say that the present example is a grand illustration of that rule in being very sharp throughout including centers. Lot 2087		1885-S. NGC graded MS-65. Boldly struck. What is most in full view when we examine this coin is its thick, golden mint luster -- it swirls over each side unhindered by abrasions and free of even a trace of toning. A coin with outward charm that will delight the serious Half Eagle collector.
